Shannon Thomas was born and raised in rural West Virginia. In 1993 he graduated from Richwood High School and left his homeland to test himself against the world. Since then he’s been an Airborne Ranger, a college instructor, an author, an editor, a bouncer, a network administrator, a human resources specialist, and a few other things along the way. He currently resides in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where he works a day job, promotes his novel, writes the Heretic’s Quest, pampers his cat, and enjoys life’s adventures as they unfold around him.

A smooth read but not for the faint of heart.

The second book of "The Heretic's Quest" follows Alexi Kiernan's journey in search of the Warlock he holds responsible for the destruction of his former life. At the same time another faction rises in secret to oppose the religious establishment attempting to turn the Emperor of Sarvek into little more than a figurehead.

This second part is even darker in tone than the first, and yet as decisions are made and sides are taken, hope glimmers throughout it. Some very unpleasant things happen but real life is not all honey, wine and roses, either. I would say more but that means spoilers. Suffice it to say the pacing is much better than in the first book, and the writing is consistently good.

This is a book that warrants a second reading to drink in all the little details.

Shannon Thomas returns in glorious fashion with the second installment of the Heretic's Quest series.
Heretic takes a darker turn in Alexi's journey of discovery, survival, and retribution. It answers some questions left by Warlock's Wake, while keeping other agendas shrouded in mystery. New characters are introduced and lend their own complexity to this tale. You, again, won't want to put this book down until the last page, the last word, is consumed.

Great characters!

This type of tale is well off my beaten path and wouldn't think it would be for everyone. However, I'll readily admit that the story itself is entertaining and very well written. The characters are well developed and interesting. It didn't take two pages for me to be right where we left off in the first book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

good authoritative text

I found this book to be a good, rigorous, reliable general text, an epidemiology reference that belongs to everybody's bookshelf.

Great reference, but not a book for first time epi students.

The first edition grew out to be the reference of choice of many epidemiologists. This new edition should secure that status, even though the Encyclopedia of Epidemiologic Methods (Gail and Benichou) should provide some serious competition. In fact this text is so complete that it may even stimulate the whole field.
If practising medical researchers start to apply the knowledge provided, then econometrics and psychometrics teachers will have to find a new source for their jokes.
However, in the process the book lost its attraction as a text for students. It has become more technical and less readable. That shouldn't bother students as there are plenty of good elementary books (like Hennekens) and even intermediate books (like the excellent Epidemiology: Beyond the Basics by Nieto and Szklo). The only reason I can think of why you would like to use this book in class is that you're a teacher who likes to study this ultimate reference yourself. What better way than to teach from it?
So this book isn't for students, unless however, you're a student who already has got a firm background in epidemiology, statistics, econometrics or something similar, than this may just be the book for you.

The Ultimate Reference for Epidemiologic Methods

The first edition of this book was a superb, tightly written mongraph, but it was a single-authored work written in the 1980s and needed to be updated. This new edition seems to be intended as a more comprehensive reference work on epidemiologic methods, adding a dozen authors and covering many topics that were not in the first edition, such as reproductive epidemiology and infectious disease epidemiology. Some readers might find it to be too detailed and broad to be easily digested in a short time. Nevertheless, as a reference guide, I don't think that it has any rival. The first 100 pages or so are a clearly rewritten update of the core material from the first edition. The middle chapters, which are new and mostly written by Greenland, are a little slow-going but are worth the effort if you want a cutting-edge insight into epidemiologic methods. The final section, with many contributors, presents the specific methodology of nearly every area of epidemiologic research. Overall, this book is essential if you are serious about understanding epidemiology.

Wishing for more

SPOILER ALERT!! I was definitely under-whelmed by this final volume. The final battle is exciting and cinematic, but at the same time we've seen it before in volume 4. While I was thrilled Onigami finally stops messing around in feudal Japan and got back to the present. When he gets back, there is such a time jump and the artist alludes to a lot of things that happened that for some reason we've missed. He introduces new characters but doesn't build them up much and tells us nothing about what happened to Brightring and very little about the characters we give a damn about. In the end there's still not a lot anyone can say for certain about the angel fist except that most people involved with it in any way will probably die a horrible death. I'd of course recommend reading it anyway for the illusion of closure and if you're a fan, but it's a very non conclusive open ending.

Good DD details book

Overall this is a fairly good detail book and well presented with nice modern houses. The level of details is more on the level of DD and SD and varies from project to project. The best CD details are only found in real construction drawings. The German's "Detail" magazine and books also shows comprehensive details. Another good detail book is "The architectural Detail, Dutch architects visualize their concepts" by Ed Melet.

Well this book has less texts then the Dutch architects detail book. Also, the drawing details are on average larger. The details are also drawing in an American's standard presentation. The Dutch book is presented with European hatches and drawing standards, which are not as easy to understand. The range of details type methogolies are very good, from some what of a roof garden to cylinder metal house.

At time there are too many SD overall sections and plans that take too many pages. The CD (disc) is nice and includes a lot of drawings in CAD .dwg and .eps format with no texts.

Great source of design details.

A while back, Architectural Record would include design details in each of their issues, albeit just one or two enlarged details, and mostly tiny floor plans. This book is similar to those Architectural Record issues, but in a nicely condensed series of 52 different residential projects with select plans, details, background information and photos, and at much larger sizes for excellent viewing.

The projects are separated by types of primary materials (concrete, steel, masonry, etc) and includes a index of types of details (door, glazing, roof, etc) as well as contact/address listings for the designers/architects. The big bonus of course, is that the details are available on a disk, in .EPS and .DWG formats, which are quite spectacular for further exploration of these designers' details.

It is a very well organized and complete book; I have rarely found this level of detailing and documentation in other books, and I would highly recommend this book - especially since I was able to get it for the bargain price of $20 - as a reference tool and the basis for an exploration of new ideas. If you are a detail-control-freak designer like I am, I think you would enjoy this book as well as I have.

After careful scrutiny of more details, I can tell you that there were apparently at least two different drawing editors, leading to drastically different levels of detailing and information. Further, errors in drafting and non-matching details to actual built work can be spotted in different projects, leading one to wonder about the quality control at some of these design firms. Some of the details are seemingly drawn for aesthetic sake instead of usable, working drawings; one should be careful when using these as reference material, as some - as drawn - are unusable, as if drawn by interns. Thus, I have down-ranked the book to 4 stars instead of 5.

Sets the standard

I've purchased one too many architecture books that have cool buildings with nice photos, overly self-indulgent artistic descriptions, and really not much else that is useful. Despite its title, I was expecting this book to be similar to those other ones, if only perhaps a small step forward in terms of the quality of the information.

This book is a giant leap forward compared to most architecture books. It is outstanding because it presents each project completely; with photos, plans, sections, and numerous quality details. The information is much more complete than I am accustomed to seeing from these types of books, and the drawings are for the most part clear and well-noted. There's also a CD included with DWG files and EPS files of every illustration!

Because the information is so complete...there's enough information there to really study the materials and assemblies, to understand both the concept and the execution of these great projects. This is the kind of book you can study over and over, and really learn from. Compared to other architecture books in my library it is outstanding. My only wish is that the author would keep going and expand her great work into numerous other architecture styles (way beyond contemporary buildings).

He felt a familiar mode of relaxation, something he’d been trained to do in the service, so this wasn’t new to his brain but it sure was a welcome stranger. Mentally he felt alert...aware. But the flashing light took on the effect of a strobe light, pulsing deep to the back of his brain.
When Jerry snapped to consciousness he was alert to the voice of the President. He listened intently to what seemed instructions. In fact, he knew these were instructions. Somehow he’d been called back on a mission. Somehow they knew he was here on this empty road. He looked where the tape should have played while he listened to the President, “We have a war we must declare.” .” The tape had ejected at the end, which they were built to do even on a manual playback recorder. The President continued, “Not only abroad does this war rage, but here in this nation, on our streets, and it is up to you, to me, to us all to make sure we win this war at any cost. To lose the war on drugs is more than our nation can afford to pay.” Johnson didn’t know why, but he remembered how the Theta training worked. He remembered everything.
The President listed events that had happened over the past thirty years and how we have made some improvements but most of the time nothing had happened. The drug problem in the United States was tearing the moral fiber of the country. He said while every President since the 1960’s have all given lip service to the war on drugs reclaiming America’s streets, nothing much had actually been accomplished. The current drug industry was the most profitable, strong, and most violent industry this country had ever seen. Gangs had taken it over. Gangs that made inner-cities their battle grounds. Drive-by shootings were common. Now it had escalated into drive-by bombings. Terror reined supreme and it was moving into the suburbs. “We must defeat this problem of drugs and gangs. Only by defeating the drug empire, by dismantling local street gangs, can we begin to make a dent in the problem. This is a war. The moral equivalent of war. We must make this a primary objective: To stop criminals and dismantle the gangs.” Primary objective.

NLP + fiction, for those that like to learn from stories

The NLP field has become populated with many introduction books that try to bring the same message using other words. Only a few books break away from this mold, and Primary Objective is one of them. Over the last years, the idea to bring NLP messages in story form has been attempted by several authors. This one had the benefit that I read it to the end (which I can't say of 2 other "fiction type" NLP books). Indeed, the story line makes sense. If you (or someone you know) like to read thrillers, with the necessary violent aspect, but want to learn something useful at the same time this book may be something for you. The scary thing about the story is that many of the "strange" things that happen may indeed be possible if one combines hypnosis, NLP and martial arts (certainly if you know enough about NLP). A lot of NLP trained people may hope that this kind of application doesn't become real!
The second part of the book is a basic NLP training Manual. In 95 pages it succeeds to cover (in a structured manner) most of the material one will learn in a "classic" NLP practitioner training, even if it misses some of Grinder's "new-code" elements, such as a discussion on perceptual positions. The material might be worked out further, but then you would end up with "yet another introduction". I would rather recommend to complement this book with some of the "selected other NLP reading" that the author recommends.
Given that I don't know if I would be able to write fiction, I admire the author's skill. Yet, If I have to give some suggestions for a second print, I would encourage the author to improve his fiction writing skills even more. I have no particular advise on how to do it, but I have a feeling there must be ways to improve the packaging of the story. And maybe the characters of the story could use other NLP models, such as the meta-model and perceptual positions, as well. Finally, I wonder why the author didn't put the NLP section in a separate book, or dropped it altogether. By combining both parts in one book, you miss the mysticism that surrounded the "null-abstracts" that A.E. van Vogt published in his science fiction classic "The Players of Null-A" (which were in fact excerpts from Korzybski's work on General Semantics).
Still, this is a great job to spread out NLP. I hope it intrigues some people.

I expected better...

Primary Objective is comprised of two parts, a novel and a mini-textbook.
The story was no worse than many of the shows on network television, but I had hoped for more. The plot line, the imagery, the characterizations, the dialogue, and the pacing were not up to the standards I expected. Perhaps I set my sights too high, as I have read better fiction online, free.
The mini-textbook was okay, for readers with little or no exposure to neuro-linguistic programming. However, for anyone who has read Bandler and Grinder, there is precious little information which is new or exciting. Again, I suppose it is possible I set the bar too high...

A deep thought provoking book

"Primary Objective" by Will Horton is an interesting combination of a fictional story/metaphor and NLP course manual. The story has incredible distortion which keeps the reader paying close attention to every twist and turn to the end. Though some spots could have been played out a little more, the ending is a wonderful "cliff-hanger" of sorts and leaves the mind open to imagine what could come. The course manual is one of the best outlines of NLP available and provides many exercises which a trainer could utilize for group workshops on management, communication, and perception (amongst many areas).

About the Author

David Croteau taught about the sociology of media as an Associate Professor (retired) in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the author of Politics and the Class Divide: Working People and the Middle-Class Left and co-author, with William Hoynes, of Experience Sociology.

William Hoynes is Professor of Sociology and former Director of the Media Studies Program at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he teaches courses on media, culture, and social theory. He is the author of Public Television for Sale: Media, the Market, and the Public Sphere and co-author, with David Croteau, of Experience Sociology.

huge amount of highlighting

I did get the book that I asked for. I did get it quickly. But there is so much highlighting in it, it is almost unreadable. It was considered "good" used, but (since I can tell from the 4 markings from libraries and other colleges)it is "over used".

Shooting history on the wing

Media-disseminated messages flood our every waking second, affecting us in ways we often do not readily discern. Croteau and Hoynes take the reader on an exploration of these media forces in a sociological journey that walks then leaps from the birth of printed words for the masses to cyberspace for the individual. In the process, we learn a lot along the way. Not only about media, but, about ourselves. Unlike most college course texts in Media and Society (in sociology or journalism), "Media Society" is written in understandable English and is not ruefully Marxian in ideological slant. The work plays it straight down the middle. The authors' goal, to which they succeed, is to provide information that shows the complexity of social relationships in, around and through which information from all sources is sought and internalized by "receivers" then, through feedback, subtly affects the "senders" and subsequent messages as well. Surprisingly up-to-date in information, especially concerning the so-called New Media (a synthesis of current technologies, traditional entertainment programs-turned-political,and old news media). Croteau and Hoynes not only introduce the reader to the media mileau in society, they show how economics drive news coverage. At the same time they explain that media consolidations have not shrunk the markets as first feared, but have actually led--perhaps inadvertently--to an explosion of different, often smaller and more intimate media. The media pie, they attest, is growing bigger as the number of slices inexplicably increase. In later chapters, the authors do a commendable job acquainting the reader with communications theory, especially explaining how opinions are formed. My favorite chapter, given my predilections, are the chapters dealing with media and the political world (and the rest of the chapters in Part 4). The authors also enter the globalization fray by demonstrating not only how American pop culture is transforming traditional cultures (see Barber's McWorld v. Jihad for greater detail), but also how traditional cultures are influencing American pop culture in ways greater than we had intuited. Anyone interested in gaining a sense of how media is impacting his or her daily life and how we, as social beings, react to that impact, should certainly read this wonderful book.

Great Overview

This is a great introduction to media studies. It generally covers a lot of theories and their originators. It does not go into a great deal of depth on any one of them, however, this book is great to get ideas for a theory that one might wish to expand on in detail. I have used this many times for short papers in which I want to incorporate an idea, but do not want the hassle of a lot of in depth research on topic.

RAVI ZACHARIAS is founder and chairman of the board of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, headquartered in Atlanta. Dr. Zacharias and his wife, Margie, have three grown children.
DR. VINCE VITALE, born in NYC, went to study philosophy at Princeton University, and there took an unexpected journey that led him to God. He now teaches at Wycliffe Hall of Oxford University, is Senior Tutor at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, and is a speaker for RZIM.

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better than this one

We ask it every day. We ask it in the big things and the small things. We ask it when our world implodes around us and when we explode into our world. It is a universal question asked in every human language and guttural moan imaginable. It is asked the world over, from the richest to the poorest, from the East to the West, from ancient times to our modern days. It is a question inherent to our being, the answer to which provides the answer for our ontological longing.

Why Suffering?

Zacharias begin the book by elaborating on the question. What it is the people mean when they ask this question? How are we supposed to answer? Among other things, he develops the difference between the intellectual question and the personal question. In other words, the beginnings of an answer lie in why the question is being asked. Is this just another intellectual exercise for a skeptic or have they recently been through a tragic loss. Zacharias suggests that while the problem of evil can be discussed philosophically, it is usually best answered pastorally.

From this introduction, Zacharias and Vitale trade chapters on various responses to the problem of suffering. Space prohibits a full analysis, so suffice it to say that Zacharias writes on the responses of freedom and morality while Vitale writes about grace, the Cross, and hope. Zacharias also writes a magnificent chapter midway through that compares the Christian answer to the answers from Buddhism, Islam, and naturalism.

Every chapter in the book is a goldmine. I suggest you take just over a week to read this book and focus on one chapter a day. Let the material sink it, grapple with it, think through it, and incorporate it into your own life.

One thing to note: Ravi and Vince could not have more different writing styles. Ravi’s writes the way he speaks, with such precision and clarity that I can hear the lilt of his voice in my head as I read his thoughts. Vince’s writing is more rugged and conversational and also fits his own personality and speaking tone. It’s jarring, at times, if you read more than one chapter at a time, but does not affect the quality of the book.

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better for the average reader than what Zacharias and Vitale offer here. Clear, simply stated answers confirmed through a wealth of resources. Everyone needs to read this book because everyone deals with this question. Do yourself and those around you a favor and pick it up now.

A brilliant mix of deep thought and personal insight to tackle this challenging question

The question of why there is suffering in this world is a difficult one, and a personal one for many, but in "Why Suffering?" the authors address this thorny issue with a wonderful balance of considered thought, studied Philosophy, and personal insight. The authors write in a warm and easily readable tone, while still taking the topic seriously and considering it from a number of angles.

Whether you are someone struggling through suffering yourself, someone supporting a friend through a difficult time, a Christian wanting to know how faith answers this difficult question, or an agnostic wanting to see whether the claims of religion stand up in the face of evil: this well-considered, intellectually rigorous, and deeply insightful book is a must read.

One of the most helpful and thought provoking books I have read in a long time.

I couldn't stop eating this book!

Why Suffering? is a relatively small book (229 pages) that is crammed full of very large questions and even larger answers. Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale each offer several chapters that respond to the contention that “if there really is a loving God, there would be no pain and suffering in the world.”
While the topics of logic and reason may not be at the top of anyone's “Conversation Starters” list, the authors use both to provide intellectual answers to emotional questions. They differentiate between logic and reason, making clear that “using logic as a test for truth and reasoning does not always result in the same implications of what is true...It is imperative that we understand not only the logical problem that is being presented but the reasoning process that we are bringing to bear upon this very important question.”
Almost every page of the book prompts highlighting nuggets that bear further study; they make you want to call your study partner to share an “aha” discovery.
Whether you are a Christian or a skeptic or a seeker, this book will provide you with hours of inspiration and many interesting topics for conversation.
