Thoroughly worth reading

At last we have a thorough going critique of the subjectivist position. This book is equally suited to those approaching the subject from the philosophical viewpoint and those who are active workers in the fields of visual representation.

Not very helpful

I looked forward to reading this book. I was encouraged by the reviews and by the table of contents. But after spending the past several days with it, I have to say that I have gotten very little out of it at all. Perhaps it is because I do not have a background in philosophy and have not got a lot of patience for it. My background is in lit theory and art history. If you are an artist, I do not think you will find much that is helpful in this book. It's not that I expected anything practical. I expected a theorizing of the problems of depiction in art, including color and form. Instead, I found what seems to me like a lot of quibbling over, for instance, whether something looks like or represents something else. Yes, there is a difference. Does it actually matter? Maybe to philosophers it does. But to artists? I do not think so.

Seriously twisted but I loved it!!!

This may be one of the most erotic stories I've ever read. I loved how the story started, and just when I thought I had a handle on the torture taking place, the story shifted...and then shifted again. And I loved it. I love reading erotic horror and this new author did not disappoint. I will definitely be checking out M.J. Ferguson's other stories and eagerly awaiting the sequel to Depravity. If you like Edward Lee and Matt Shaw, I highly recommend this one!

Dark, Twisted and Kinky, Oh My!

4.5 stars - Wow, this one threw me for a bit of a loop. This twisted little tale starts off with Master/Slave that seems to be a bit non/con, but we quickly find that isn’t the case.

This is being told in the voice of the Slave, so that helps to really get his perspective on what’s happening and his real feelings about things. Even though the actions and behavior of the Master seem pretty awful, the Slave ensures us that he actually loves everything his Master does. So, you think that’s pretty much what the story is about, until wham! there is a total twist that actually had my head spinning in an attempt at understanding what was really taking place. The feeling of mental unstableness which had been looming in the back of my mind just skyrocketed. But this isn’t even the half of it. No, there is another twist that left me cringing.

I won’t give it away, but once again, the Slave tells us a story about how he came to learn about Master’s other “kink.” Let me say that it takes quite a bit to make me squeamish, but I almost didn’t make it through this part. It is pretty gory and things are more than a little effed up.

Enough about the content. Ms. Ferguson’s first debut story packs quite the punch in very few pages. The writing is smooth and the images almost too clear. It felt as though I was watching the scenes play out, as opposed to reading them. If you love horror or kink, or kinky horror, this is a fabulous example. I am almost too afraid to see where this is going to go next, but even though I might need to read with my eyes covered at some points, like a fender bender on the highway, I doubt I’ll be able to pass it by without looking.

Wow...did not see that coming.

Wow...was not expecting that. With that said, however, I love books that challenge my imagination and I love books that are able to catch me off guard, and this one did...on every element. This is about a master and his slave and their kinks. At first, I was torn because the master does some pretty harsh things to his slave. Thankfully, the author tells the story thru the slave and you realize quickly that the slave loves everything his master subjects him too. AND...then...wow...I love the twist and actually kinda whooped at the author's creativity.
But, the author has another surprise in store and I will have to say that it not only took me off guard but also pushed the boundaries of my limits. I love my dark reads, I love learning new aspects of D/s relationships, and I love being pushed to my own limits and MJ Ferguson accomplished all of that in this very short read.
This is a dark story so be prepared if you decide to take the chance. I was reading the end with one eye open and one eye closed because I needed to see where the author was going, but a little afraid also. It's hard to say that I loved this story, considering the content, but I definitely loved the power play dynamic and I admire the author for going somewhere most would not.
There will be a book 2 coming out and I know I will read it because the author has poked my curiosity. The book is short but the author was able to cover a lot of territory and she definitely gets your attention in the first few sentences. The story is well-written​, and the plot is...well, you should just read for yourself. I'm pretty sure you will be surprised by what you find.

Teenagers and Sports

This book contains a series of original short stories written by authors of novels for teenagers. Although each story is related to sports in some way, mostly the stories are about adolescents relating to others in their lives. Some use sports as escapism from something. Peter thinks cross-country running might give him some rest from the two hours of piano practice he is required to do every day. While hiding from police, Randy takes up boxing. Triathlons give mentally challenged Clark a place to be successful. David joins an otherwise all-Hawaiian paddling team to get away from his father, just as Lenny stays out playing handball till all hours of the night to get away from his father. Max goes fishing to get away from the daily grind. Kirsty escapes on a yacht by mistake, then realizes she loves to sail. Jennifer plays tennis to keep occupied while waiting for the end of the world. And the hobbyist collects memorabilia to make himself forget he isn't an athlete.

Others in this book play a sport to get something in particular out of it. Sun wants her father's attention on her instead of on her little brother all of the time. Jessie wants her friends Meadow and Diane to meet each other and get along, and she thinks the racquetball court is the perfect place for that to happen. Curt and his friends want to be in the "Guinness Book of World Records." Moose wants to carry the football for once, instead of just tackling the other guys.

Still others are changed by their sport. Joey learns a little something about outsmarting the other team when his uncle coaches his high school wrestling team, and Patrice's entire life is affected when she goes on a scuba diving trip to the Caribbean.

Each story, although different, is able to pull the reader into the life of a teenager as it revolves and as sports affect it. Most of these stories were excellent. I liked how they involved sports but that wasn't the entire focus of the stories. It was also interesting to read what some of my favorite young adult authors were able to do in a short story format.

I tend to like novels better than short stories, though, as short stories always leave me wanting to know more about the characters and their lives.

This is a great read if you are pursuing of a deeper knowledge of God's word. I am reading this having recently finished Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine by Wayne Grudem. I highly recommend both books.

Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films

I have always thought that the Harry Potter movies have some of the best production design of any films, and so a book dedicated to highlighting that work is a must-own in my view. The book is full of color photos and conceptual artwork. Each location also has plenty of text discussing the context in which each location appears in the films as well as the design process.

2. Diagon Alley - includes Gringotts Bank, Olliander's Wand Shop, and the Leaky Cauldron
3. King's Cross Station - includes Platform Nine and Three-Quarters and the Hogwarts Express
4. Hogwarts Castle - includes the Great Call, Moving Straicases, Gryffindor Rooms, Chamber of Secrets
5. Hogwarts Classrooms & Offices - includes Headmaster's Office, Umbrige's Office, Potions Classroom

Highly recommended for Harry Potter fans

[[VIDEOID:5c4d369eaa46b2473b8c66e2489a6a10]]Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films is actually one of the books from the Harry Potter Page to Screen Collector's Edition. In that collector's edition, the book was titled Environments Envisioned: Building Fantastic Sets and Scouting Dramatic Locations. I don't have the collector's edition, so I can't compare the exact contents, so I'll just talk about this book alone.

I only have the standard edition of Harry Potter Page to Screen so the first thing I want to say is it's great to have this book sold separately rather than bundling it into the pricey collector's edition. Sure it took a long time for it for come out but it's more affordable, and all fans can enjoy the book now.

This is a large 208-page hardcover film companion. The cover has a nice design with trimmings embossed. The presentation is beautiful and the same can be said about the layout inside. The pages are filled with behind the scenes photography, film stills and lots of commentary. Fans will no doubt find it extremely satisfying to delve into the information and revisit the Harry Potter world again -- I know I did.

This book focuses on the locations and sets. There are environment concept art, stories on how the sets were build, what was filmed there, how the props were created, how the sets relate to the movie and the book, and many other bits of interesting details.

Dursley's House
Diagon Alley
King's Cross Station
Hogwarts Castle
Hogwarts Classrooms and Offices
Hogwarts Grounds
Hogsmeade
Ministry of Magic
Wizarding Homes

Highly recommended to all Harry Potter fans. It's the only way to "visit" all the grounds without being growled by Snape.

Another thing to note is there are two publishers for this book, Harper Design and Titan Books. Depending on where you buy it, the price of the book will differ.

A Must Have Book for Every Harry Potter Fan

If there were a 6th Star, this book would deserve it in my estimation. It must have taken forever to compile and write.Jody Revenson is to be commended for her detail and research. For ANY Harry Potter fan (I am 80! - and after I absorbed every word and illustration, my grandchildren - 20 and 30 somethings - are now in line to do the same.) I even read every word on the last page. There is a UK group which is donating not one, but two trees, for each tree used in the printing of this book! The pages are crammed full of the intricate original black and white illustrations/plans for the H.P. sets, then beautiful color illustrations, and finally actual photos of the cast and crew at the various venues or studio sets. Even the notes explaining each image are chock full of little- known tidbits of information. It was not just my age that caused me to dig out the magnifying glass to delve deeper into each photo. My family also peered into each nook and cranny to see what was on a bed stand or book case, commisioned tapestry, or detail of Oxford architecture. It is a thick book on lovely paper and with a true Harry Potteresque embossed "leather" cover. Run, don't walk to your nearest bookstore, if you care at all for the true epic of our time - J.K.Rowling and her magnificent story!

Brilliant Must Have For Any FZ200 Owner - A Virtual Course In Photography

To say that I am an amateur photographer is an under statement. A point and shoot guy for over 40 years, half of which I never knew which side of the camera to look through.

As I am being dragged into the 21st century I decided it was time to invest in a decent camera. Plus I was at the point where if I researched one more camera my brains were going to pour out of my ears.

I've had my eye on the FZ200 since it's pre-release - impressed by the 5 star review from CNET, I was still hesitant to make the plunge. The clincher was when I came across Mr. Houghton's web site and read every single blog entry regarding the FZ200 - I was knocked out. What is more, Mr. Hougtons youtube channel is sheer brilliance - he goes over every aspect of the FZ200 and it's educational value is superb. Despite a huge following Graham will take the time to answer your questions directly within the youtube comment threads.

The book is simply marvelous, it's the ultimmate "Go To" source for anything to do with the FZ200 - beautiful images married with a compelling conversational tone Mr. Haighton is as an accomplished a writer as he is a photographer.

Graham Houghton does a wonderful job of explaining both the basic and advanced features of the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ200 camera. This book and Graham's YouTube video tutorials are all one needs to get the most out of this camera. This book is so much better than the manual that accompanies the camera. If you own the FZ200, you'll love this book.

I have the E version of this manual and it's very good. Apparently Mr. Houghton wrote this by himself and to me that's impressive.So much more informative than the Panasonic user manual. I Imagine the paper version is worth every penny. He has an excellent you tube channel on photography, in particular the FZ200. Don't let his mispronunciation of the letter "Z" put you off. (J/K Graham...)
