About the Author
Peter H. Zipfel is a graduate of the University Stuttgart, Germany, and the Catholic University of America with a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. He founded Modeling and Simulation Technologies, which advises and instructs functional integration of aerospace systems using computer simulations. For 35 years he taught courses in modeling and simulation, guidance and control, and flight dynamics at the University of Florida, and over the span of fifty years he created aerospace simulations of helicopters, missiles, aircraft, and hypersonic vehicles for the German Helicopter Institute, the U.S. Army, and U.S. Air Force. He is an AIAA Associate Fellow and an internationally recognized short course instructor.

As a photographer, she has worked for various culinary publications and chefs' books.

A beautifully-illustrated guide to Japanese cuisine

Out of the 20+ Japanese cookbooks I own (including the excellent Japanese Farm Food and Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen), this is truly one of the most helpful due to the step-by-step photos and clear explanations. I like that the Japanese names of the dishes are also included (and the meaning / origins) explained. The technique section is worth the cost of the book alone! You will find an overview of the aesthetics behind Japanese washoku cuisine, kitchen tools, ingredients, traditional table settings and etiquette.

Chihiro Masui and Hanae Kaede have done a wonderful job at making Japanese cuisine accessible to the (American) masses. I loved that the authors also differentiated between traditional Japanese cuisine and influence from foreign cuisine. Recipes are divided into six sections (starters, bowls and soups, vegetables and tofu, fried and grilled, rice and noodles, and sweets). Suggestions for readily available substitutions are also provided.

For several years, I have tried to master the art of rolling Japanese-style omelettes. I even brought home a gorgeous Japanese iron omelette pan from Japan with no luck, but thanks to the clear step-by-step photos, I finally feel like I'm one step closer to mastering the proper technique to make beautiful rolled omelettes. There are so many fascinating tidbits and tips that have helped me to better understand Japanese food (I took four cooking classes around Japan when I was working there previously in 2011), and I feel that I am a better / more confident home cook for it.

I highly recommend this for anyone new to Japanese cuisine; the step-by-step photos are truly helpful in understanding the basic preparation of common dishes such as chawanmushi, tamagoyaki, steamed dishes, wagashi, etc.

The Simplicity Of Delicious Japanese Home Cooking

I love Oriental and Eastern food and I have taught myself to make some of my family's favorite Chinese dishes over the years, but little did I know that Japanese food is much more than Sushi and just as delicious as our favorite Chinese until I started reading this Japanese Home Cooking Book and preparing many of these dishes myself.

The authors Chihiro Masui and Hanae Kaede have written and composed a perfect introduction to cooking Japanese in your home, exactly as the cooks of the house do in Japan. Japanese cooking has a true simplicity about it- most meals can be prepared in 30 minutes or less, and it isn't because they eat everything raw, but rather because they use minimal ingredients and slice everything so thin, that the cooking time is very short.

What I especially love about this cookbook is that there are gorgeous clear color photographs for every single recipe. Even better, there are step by step clear color photos in some of the recipes for anything more complicated or unfamiliar to prepare. In the back of the book are Basic Recipe And Techniques in step by step clear color photos to Prepare Rice, Cutting Vegetables, Cutting Fish, Slicing Filets, Cutting Shrimp, Draining Tofu, Blanching Vegetables, Simmering With A Drop Lid, Making Dashi, and even how to make the different Vinegars used in many of their dishes.

The beginning of the book gives you a history of what the Japanese cook and why. Meat is a western influence, as there isn't much land for cattle or farms, and of course the sea provides an abundance of their foods. I was shocked to read that the Japanese dislike food smells due to the high humidity and natural smells from the water. This makes them dry everything and dispose of the smelly parts of foods immediately, like fish scales.

I was also surprised that Sweets are not eaten as desserts, but any time with tea. The book covers Cold Starters, Bowls & Soups, Vegetables & Soy, Steamed & Simmered Dishes, Deep-Fried & Grilled dishes, Rice & Noodles and Sweets. The ingredients are minimal and you will find the plating and perfect cutting of the foods make the dishes look absolutely beautiful. A simple dish of Rice and Peas look like a work of art. So far, my family have fallen in love with Tempura, Salmon Teriyaki, many different noodles, Grilled Gyoza (just like Chinese potstickers only thinner wrap and more vegetables) and Korokke (Western influence of beef, potato and onion breaded and fried). This beautiful well organized book of delicious home style Japanese dishes all beautifully photographed in color earns a big 5 STARS.

A Comprehensive, Beautifully Crafted, Well Written Collection of Professional Quality Recipes for the Home Kitchen.

What a great book. This is a wonderful and complete introduction to Japanese Food. I am half Japanese and grew up eating at my Aunt & Uncle's Japanese restaurant. I even worked there for several years while in college. He was trained in Japan as a French chef. They are both extremely good cooks and created a foundation for me to build upon. Many of the dishes dear to my heart are in this book. They includes mostly the same ingredients and preparation methods too. If you have been to Japan or even if you have not, you will probably find this a treasure trove of information!

The first thing that strikes me is how beautiful the photos are. Each dish has a completion photo to show you what the dish should look like and how to garnish it. Some more complex dishes include additional instructional photos to give a better idea of the preparation method. I think the balance between photos and text is "just right". This is how I like my cookbooks to be. "Aesthetically Efficient" and appropriate.

The second thing is how well the text is written. Obviously the authors are Japanese and the text is perfect English. The style of writing and grammar make reading the information contained both easy and interesting.
-First an introduction to each dish is given. This is a brief description that gives you an overall idea of what the dish is all about. Flavor, texture, temperature and use are usually covered.
-Then the Ingredients List in a bullet format. Measurements are in tbsp, tsp, ounces and cups with (metric) in non-distracting parenthesis beside.
-The Preparation Steps are in bold numbered list format. Well written and step-by-step.
-Recipes with additional instructional photos will be in alphabetical list format beside the Preparation Steps.
-Lastly and this is one of my favorite things about this cookbook is that most of the recipes also include a small gray "Notes" section at the bottom that is used to further clarify information about the recipe. In some recipes like "Nuta with Green Onions and Calamari" it is used to explain that you can use red, black and white miso and add sugar to sweeten. Then explains about Japanese wakegi onion and the subtle difference it has from most American green onions. Lastly it makes suggestions on how you can adjust the flavor sharper with a little Japanese mustard. These notes are valuable. They are same kinds of information that my Uncle would give to me to make the dish "exceptional". The notes from a professional chef. The details are the "secret ingredients".

The book is well organized and complete. You can easily prepare a simple single dish or a culmination of 5-8 smaller dishes. I remember several times when the president of a large motor company would visit the company plants in the US that when he was visiting the plant near our city he would eat at my Uncle's restaurant. I was working there several of those times. He was always accompanied by a host of body guards and 8-10 local plant executives. My uncle would prepare a 12 course meal plan that would be served with drinks and take well over 2 hours for the entire meal to be enjoyed. It would start with simple appetizers like Miso Soup, Wakame Sunomono, and Tofu. Then he would start working in dishes that contained more substantial ingredients like eggplant, potatoes, fish and meats. Then rounding out with some softer dishes like Chawan Mushi and Soba noodles. After a few hours of drinking, it was usually closed with a desert then perhaps some Ochazuke or Yaki Soba. Of course the rice bowls were always kept full. Of course he would always prepare more than necessary and the employees always got to enjoy small samples of the dishes they were helping to prepare and serve!

Excellent supplementary text!

This book is an excellent supplementary text to any calculus course. This book covers topics coverred in calc I and calc II courses. This book covers derivatives, integrals, infinite series, Taylor Polynomials, Differential Equations, and some multivariable calc techniques. I recommend this to anyone who is struggling with using their courses calc book. This book is written at a level that is easy to understand and--bottom line--makes sense.

Its downfall, in some ways, makes it an even more powerful book. This book has few applications and is a little short on the number of example problems. After I completed and understood all of the problems in the sections, I easily could understand the problems my professor assigned in an Honors Calculus II course. I highly recommend this book!

fantastic calculus text

The other reviewers have all said the same thing, but I like this book so much I'd like to reiterate. Textbooks these days are heavy on justification (applications), full of complicated graphs, historical asides, and glimpses of more advanced machinery than is needed. This book does something that all of those "bonus" features sometimes get in the way of -- it explains the material clearly and concisely and has plenty of helpful exercises. Even if you're doing fine with the huge textbook your high school or university uses, get this book. Its treatment of the subject is likely better than whatever else you're using and is simply a breeze to read. The sections covering the fundamental theorem, integration by parts and partial fractions are especially good.

Great compact calculus book

Great small compact and short book. More of a basic calculus primer and not a massive serious tome - so the proofs are here but not in the most rigorous form.

Who would benefit?
1. Non-mathematicians who need to understand and use parts of calculus in a very practical way.
2. Non-mathematicians who may need to use much if any calculus but who need a bit of higher math (above algebra) to better understand how engineers, physicists and social scientists (economists) can actually make some accurate predictions and calculations. The discussion of how limits are taken and how numerical approximation can be derived using power series is most helpful here.
3. Mathematicians who are considering writing a text book, workbook or something aimed at the beginning student. This is a great example of simple clear writing that is still engaging.
4. For students it might be a useful adjunct to one of those massive tomes or if the course you are taking goes off on a tangent (sorry about the pun)

The nation, tuned to the nightly news, watched in horror as state troopers clubbed him viciously, fracturing his skull as he led a march in Selma, Alabama, in 1965. Today, he's the only member of Congress who can be proud of having been carried off to jail more than 40 times. With the help of a collaborator, journalist Michael D'Orso, this remarkable man has written a truly remarkable book. Walking with the Wind is a deeply moving personal memoir that skillfully balances the intimate and touching recollections of the deeply thoughtful Lewis with the intense national drama that was the civil rights movement.

Lewis, an Alabama sharecropper's son, went to Nashville to attend a Baptist college where, at the end of the 1950s, his life and the new civil rights movement became inexorably entwined. First came the lunch counter sit-ins; then the Freedom Rides; the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Lewis's election to its chairmanship; the voter registration drives; the 1963 march on Washington; the Birmingham church bombings; the murders during the Freedom Summer; the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; Bloody Sunday in Selma in 1964; and the march on Montgomery. Lewis was an active, leading member during all of it. Much of his account, written with freelancer D'Orso, covers the same territory as David Halberstam's The Children?Halberstam himself appears here briefly as a young reporter?but Lewis imbues it with his own observations as a participant. He is at times so self-effacing in this memoir that he underplays his role in the events he helped create. But he has a sharp eye, and his account of Selma and the march that followed is vivid and personal?he describes the rivalries within the movement as well as the enemies outside. After being forced out of SNCC because of internal politics, Lewis served in President Carter's domestic peace corps, dabbled in local Georgia politics, then in 1986 defeated his old friend Julian Bond in a race for Congress, where he still serves. Lewis notes that people often take his quietness for meekness. His book, a uniquely well-told testimony by an eyewitness, makes clear that such an impression is entirely inaccurate.

YA-Lewis was active in the American civil rights movement almost from the beginning. He was there during the lunch-counter sit-ins in Nashville in 1960, took part in the Freedom Rides of 1961, and, as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, spoke at the March on Washington in 1963. The list goes on. Like all memoirs, this one has its biases and limitations. However, for the insider's insights it provides, it is an indispensable resource.

The best memoir I've ever read

I don't like memoirs. They're usually self-serving, ego-driven and full of cheap shots. Walking With the Wind is none of those. John Lewis and his co-author have crafted a marvelously told tale of the civil rights movement. Perhaps no one but Lewis, King and Abernathy could write about the movement with this scope. Lewis was there for all of it, from jails, to voting, to sit-ins. And he describes it beautifully with the perfect pace.
I think the book's best chapters are the ones that cover what happened in Selma. I've read a half-dozen histories of the civil rights movement and none of them have recounted the Selma story better than Lewis does here.
Lewis also gives us insight into several other movement leaders. Not even Taylor Branch (the Pulitzer-winning historian and journalist) tells us about Jim Bevel with this much color. Lewis tells fascinating stories about Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael and the relations between SNCC and the other movement-leading groups. It's the kind of inside baseball a good memoir delivers.
I'm thrilled that I read this book. It has greatly contributed to my understanding of the civil rights movement.

A great American triumph

Uplifting. Eloquent. Brilliant. Inspiring. Patriotic.
John Lewis' life story is the story of a genuine American hero. The depth and strength of his moral conviction shows what character can accomplish. This book, just as this man's life, cannot be overrated or over-appreciated.
John Lewis, as a young man had the calling. His deeply religious upbringing ultimately led him to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and work with Rev. Martin Luther King. He sat in where Black people were not wanted. He demanded for Black people the rights to which all Americans have an expectation. He walked the walk at a time when it was not only unpopular, but downright death defying.
He moved from the pulpit to the halls of Congress, where he serves to this day.
As inspiring a work as I have ever read. Ought to be required reading by everyone in the Nation for a deeper understanding of the power of the American spirit.

AWESOME AND INSPIRATIONAL!

Each night I can't put "Walking With the Wind" down! Reading the autobiography of Congressman Lewis' life and work in the civil rights movement brought tears to my eyes and a heaviness of heart to realize that people hate their fellow man so much that they'd commit such acts of violence based solely on the way someone looks!
Whenever I read a book like this, I think to myself: "Thank God someone went before me because I couldn't have done it!" The tremendous amount of bravery these people had is so inspirational and heart wrenching! Not knowing your enemey is one thing, but these people knew the enemy and what they were capable of and yet, they still persevered and triumphed.
As an African American I am so proud of all those who sacrificed so very much, even sometimes making the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. Every American needs to realize the great courage these people exhibited to make this land a better place for us all.

Extremely good for both native and non-native speakers

What a fantastically enlightening and helpful book! As an English educator I must admit I was stunned at how narrow the scope of my knowledge was in this area.....and this book showed me! My ESL students (and secretly myself) have found it absolutely invaluable in decifering the meanings of unknown words from both in and out of context. I found that it made my students think more about the meanings of parts of words rather than looking at the whole word as a memorizable item. They began to process the words more and therefore retention became higher. If you teach ESL or are an educator, you NEED this book.

The great majority of Chinese learners of English tend to find it harder to learn an ever-expanding English vocabulary. Most of them have tried but failed to overcome this difficulty. By teaching them prefixes, suffixesand roots, it will help the learners to better understand the words because it tells how these words are spelled and combined, what they mean, and where they come from.
Also,by teaching English vocabulary learners prefixes, suffixes and roots, learners can integrate easily the concepts and meanings of the words while they split up the combination of the words. Furthermore, they can read the prefixes to assume the basic meanings of the words. On the contrary, they also can associate the ideas of the meanings by reading through the suffixes. With following same set of pattern, learners learn by analogy so as to bear these vocabularies in minds for long and easily. Th successful use of this book with the practice of the exercise will benefit learners step by step. So, as an ESL teacher of vocabulary can choose this book as an reference.

Westrip, in this follow-up to her book of recipes for Indian nobility, begins with a brief overview of the Parsi people: descendents of Persians, the Parsi were Zoroastrians who left what is now Iran over 1,000 years ago and settled in India. The recipes here are spicy and intriguing, recognizably Indian but unique in their approach. Though the Parsi don't have the same dietary restrictions as their Muslim and Hindu neighbors, they do shun beef and pork out of respect. Their fondness for goat shows in Kid with Potatoes; for offal in Lambs Tongue and Lentil; and, in the form of patties or spiced and pickled, for a "pungent"-possibly "offensive"-type of fish known as Bombay Duck. A selection of rice dishes and desserts is less distinctively Parsi, but delicious. Unfortunately, Westrip does not include explanations of common Indian ingredients, such as ghee. The only other caveat goes to dieters: the Parsi fondness for frying is fully evident here. However, as Westrip points out, this is the only Parsi cookbook in print in America, so it will surely be of great interest to cooks looking to spice up their Indian standards.

An excellent book, little known in the US

An excellent book, little known in the US. Great complement to Nilifour King's "My Bombay Kitchen." Joyce also has a superb book on Mogal cooking. Both of her books contain surprises even for "know-it-all" Indian chefs and home cooks.

I originally ordered this book in JANUARY! Its publication has been delayed multiple times. I would love to see this book, since I enjoy cooking Parsi food for my wife and need all the help I can get:) Please release this book for publication so I can buy it. It may go out of date before it hits the presses! I hope to review this book again and revise this review with a '5' once I get it.

Back home in Boulder, his stereotypically progressive and understanding parents championed his coming out in the eighth grade. Since then, Rafe has been unable to escape being the poster boy for Gay Pride. Tired of labels and limitations, he hides his true self in order to fit in and be just one of the guys. For a while it works, and he plays football, pals around with the jocks, and blends in with the straight guys. His best friend back home is furious with him for changing, and things really get complicated when he falls in love with Ben, the intellectual, brooding jock with whom he experiments one night. In the end, he just can't keep up the charade, and coming out of the closet for a second time results in the creation of some new friendships, but also the loss of some others. The book is peppered with Rafe's journal entries for a class, the only place where he's honest about his sexuality. His teacher's responses, while encouraging, don't add much to the plot. The book tackles issues of sexuality and coming out from an interesting angle, but at times the central message (honesty is the best policy) is a bit heavy-handed. Brilliant. Complex. Emotionally solid.

Books are very much a matter of taste. YA books are a sub-set of that, and I happen to love them, generally.

But this was a special book for me, both as a gay man who came out in the 1970s and as the father (with another man) of two teenagers. (Straight ones, just for the record.) Having read Konigsberg's "Out of the Pocket," which I liked a lot (did not love, to be clear), I took his recommendation to look into the next book. Very glad I did.

From the very beginning, the book's core premise was destined to make me squirm - Rafe Goldberg, a loved, self-assured, well-adjusted gay seventeen-year-old decides to move away from his bubble of liberalism and go to a New England all-boys prep school so he can shed his label - "the gay boy." He yearns to be "just one of the guys." And he succeeds. He's just butch enough to pass in a setting where no one knows him, without his hippy parents proclaiming gay pride every time he walks into a room. He is thrilled to be "normal."

Oh, Lord, was I uncomfortable from the get-go. Because I went to prep school in New England, and I never, ever managed to be "one of the guys." I tried to start over again at my Ivy League college (still in the 1970s) and that failed in the first twenty-four hours. So I hated what Rafe did. I hated what he wanted to do, because he could do it and I couldn't when I was his age.

But I trusted the author. I thought I knew where Rafe's journey would take him, and I was almost right. I was right in that I knew that Rafe was a great guy - a good kid - in spite of the dickish thing he was doing. I know that teenagers make poor choices for what seem like good reasons. I know that the boys Rafe interacts with at prep school are archetypes - and, having teenagers, I know that there is a great deal of truth in these archetypes, so yelling "stereotype" is beside the point. All teenagers are trying out roles, trying to see who they want to be; figuring out who they are.

Rafe, and Ben and Toby and Albie and Claire Olivia - even the jocks - felt pretty spot-on to me. I've had the dubious pleasure of reliving high school these past four years through my kids(arrgh) and my own memories support Konigsberg's setting pretty closely. Rafe and Ben are the only two characters who get to develop deeply. But the secondary characters are vivid and compelling - and you watch as Rafe labels them - all the while trying to avoid his own label! - and then begins to appreciate them (or not) according to who they really are.

And my favorite YA books are the ones in which parents matter. Rafe's parents matter, and are living proof that supportive loving parents are just as annoying as distant disapproving ones. Except that they love you, and that, in the end, is what makes all the difference for Rafe. Rafe makes a journey of self discovery (NOT of self-acceptance). And he takes us with him, in one of the gentlest, most intimate YA books I've ever read.

Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg, A Standalone LGBT YA Romance

I chose this book because I read the excerpt and it sounded dissimilar from any other romance book I have read. I was hoping for an interesting new voice for life as a young, gay man. This book provided that perspective and considerably more.
Rafe Goldberg was tired of being “the gay kid.” He came out when he was 14 years old to wonderful parents and a welcoming community in Boulder, Colorado. His mother was very involved in a gay rights group and he began speaking to high schools about coming out and being proud of who you are. However, Rafe was starting to feel like no one saw him when they looked his way. He was concerned that he was nothing but a label in the eyes of others. So for his junior year of high school, he decided to transfer to an all-boys boarding school in Massachusetts. He wanted a fresh start. In order to see what life would be like without labels, he made the decision not to admit that he was gay. This seemed like a wonderful choice when he was fitting in like he never had before. But close friendships started to conflict with his goals. He began to wonder if he could really put a major part of who he was on hold.
I did not expect to feel so much emotion when I began to read this book. From the very first paragraph, I was laughing out loud. Before I knew it, my heart was broken and I was in tears. I think it says a lot about the authors’ skill as a writer that I was pulled into the story without even being aware it was happening. I was invested in Rafe and how his life would turn out. After finishing, I struggled to keep it in my hand when all I wanted to do was launch it across the room. As much as I fell in love, I also felt lost. I consider myself lucky that I read this book when I did. The sequel, Honestly Ben, will be available on the 28th of March. I for one, will do everything in my power to have that book in my hands.

This book can be read by younger teens and adults alike.

I give this book 5 stars. I have already recommended it to friends and family.

Passionate Protagonists, Frustrating Ending

PRO: Rafe, a well adjusted Gay high school sophomore, is tired of Gayness being his defining characteristic. Wanting to make a fresh start he moves across country to Natick School in Massachusetts where he will not divulge his Gayness, where he will be just Rafe. All goes along fine until he falls in love with Ben, a strong, athletic, and thoughtful Straight boy. This set-up promises great plot and character development and delivers on it up to a point. Both Rafe and Ben are richly portrayed and plausible right into the far reaches of their relationship. I was grabbed by the growing tension of their sexual identities and enthralled by their personalities.

CON: After the crisis, however, the plot falls apart. Consider Rafe's situation. He has broken Ben's heart. He has needlessly antagonised the leaders of the soccer team, which he enjoyed playing on just a few months earlier. His only remaining friends are at the periphery of the community.

The Rafe we see at the end is not the Rafe we have followed all along. The Rafe who allowed Ben an hour to catch up alone with Bryce is not the Rafe who interrupts Ben when he is studying for a final. The Rafe who worries that Ben might leave his life appears blithe and oblivious after the crisis. The Rafe who couldn't wait to leave his roommates for talk with Ben, now sees them as his best buddies. This is not character development; this is lack of consistency.

In the last chapter Rafe cavorts with his friend Claire Olivia among the mummers in downtown Boulder, Colorado. Happy in his Gay self once agin, he comes across as so oblivious to the havoc he has left behind at Natick, not to mention the damage he done to Ben, so oblivious as to be cavalier, even flippant. Why should I care about Rafe? . . . and that's the end!

SUMMARY: I started out the story living Rafe's life along side him. By the end I identified with Ben. Their moments together contain so much power that I hung on to every word and gesture. But the story ends just where the hard work of resolution should begin. I feel cheated.
