About the Author
Branden R. Williams (CISSP, CISM, CPISA, CPISM) leads an information security practice in a Global Security Consulting group at a major security firm in Flower Mound, TX and teaches in the NSA Certified Information Assurance program at the University of Dallas's Graduate School of Management. Branden has been involved in information technology since 1994, and focused on information security since 1996. He started consulting on payment security in 2004, assessing companies against the Visa CISP and Mastercard SDP programs. He has a Bachelors of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Texas, Arlington, and a Masters of Business Administration in Supply Chain Management and Market Logistics from the University of Dallas.

Daniel Odier, a scholar and teacher of tantra, turns this wisdom on its head in Desire: The Tantric Path to Awakening, saying that desire is the only true path to liberation. Odier objects to any religion that pretends to offer liberation in any form other than simple, personal experience. open to the "luminosity of existence"

According to almost all the great world religions including Buddhism, desire is an enemy blocking the path to enlightenment. Contrary to this, Daniel Odier maintains that desire is the only true path to liberation. According to Odier, the primary requirement for a spiritual seeker to fully awaken is simple, direct, personal experience. He refers to his disciplined approach as "micropractices" involving the conscious withdrawal from habitual activities for just a few seconds several times a day. There is no goal in this practice, no seeking to get somewhere or accomplish something, but rather the purpose is simply to be fully aware, fully awake, and fully present to your own divinity in the now moment. Odier describes his Tantric path as "nothing spectacular...lack[ing] in the exotic, the magickal, the extraordinary....there was no ritual other than to breathe, walk, bathe... to look at the earth, the lichens, the trees, the leaves, common objects; to enter deeply into contact with life, reality." He suggests that the "luminosity of existence" pervades everything including you. Odier received direct personal Tantric initiation from a Kashmiri Shaivite yogini, Lalita Devi, in the Tantric lineage of the Tibetan master Kalu Rinpoche which dates back several thousand years.

Excellent Micropractices

As with many I read this author's book Tantric Quest on the advice of Raven Smith and HeatherAsh Amara. That book is a charming history of the author's apprenticeship in Kashmiri Shaivism with the yogina Lalita Devi. I enjoyed it enough to see what else the author had written, and found this book listed on Amazon.com.
What we have here is a manual of his training in that tradition, a "Third Path" between an ascetic quest for spiritual enlightenment and out and out hedonism.
When I started reading it I flipped to the back for the naughty bits, with chapters on The Tantric Orgasm for Women and The Group Sexual Ritual. Then I laid it aside and didn't touch it again for a couple of years. Later, being stuck for something interesting to read I picked it up again, having forgotten that I hadn't read the whole thing. Surprise! The front of the book is packed with wonderful "micro-practices" that any spiritual seeker can incorporate into their day to good effect. My favorites are quieting the internal dialogue during the day, just by focusing on the breath for long enough to still the jibber-jabber. As he says, if you can do that even for ten or twenty seconds it's a wonderful little relief in the middle of the day. Another that I liked was to think that the food you eat wants you to eat it, the drink you drink wants you to drink it. This little thought completely changes the experience of living.
This is a marvelous book, and this review has not done justice to it. It not only bears reading, it bears rereading, perhaps several times.

Wholistic Tantra

The best thing about this book, for me, is its easy-to-understand (if not always easy-to-practice) wholistic view of Tantric practice. Tantric practice is NOT just about sex -- it's about falling in love with the whole universe on a much subtler level, if I may put it into my own words. Odier mixes chapters that give solid, Western-life examples of new ways to look at the world with chapters on readings from ancient texts. Frankly, the latter are mostly over my head, but the book is engaging enough that I plan to come back to those chapters I didn't "get" on first reading and try again. My two minor quibbles are that the book seems somewhat disorganized, and perhaps related, Odier spends part of the book talking about how Tantric practice is not really or only about sex and part of the book describing the sexual aspects -- with the transition between the two being mostly buried in one of those more mystical chapters. That being said, I am impressed with how accessible AND useful the teachings were, especially the modern-life illustrations of everyday non-sexual Tantric practice.

About the Author
Grand Master Lillian Too is undoubtedly the world's most prolific and popular writer and advocate on living with good feng shui! She has written over 100 books that have been translated into 31 different languages, and over 10 million copies of her books have been sold worldwide. After graduating with an MBA from Harvard Business School, Lillian went on to pursue a highly successful business career in banking and finance in the 1980's in Hong Kong. YA-Magnificent photographs and crisp prose make a powerful statement about the need to protect the largest tract of intact temperate rainforest on Earth. Until the authors embarked on their sailing odyssey from the northern border of the United States to the panhandle of Alaska, no one had undertaken an environmental inventory of the western Canadian coastline. This area is the home of the coastal grizzly bear and teems with wildlife and old-growth trees. The grizzly's dwindling numbers indicate the historic decline of natural wilderness throughout a sizable portion of the northwestern hemisphere. The authors make the case that only by protecting very large tracts of this coastline from logging and mining can the character of this environment be preserved. At first glance, this work might appear to be another coffee-table book, but its main purpose is to inform and motivate. The panoramic views, intimate shots of flora and fauna, chronicle of the social history of the area, and generous maps make this title beautiful as well as timely. It is unfortunate that the index merely lists references to locations noted in the text rather than to biological information, which would have made it more useful for research.

A Unique Journey AND A Desperate Plea

This book is written as a journal of a sailing voyage. Although the authors had previously visited the remarkable areas they photograph and describe six times before, the seventh visit is chronicled in these pages. Thus there is a great depth of knowledge and experience inherent to this work which transforms a simple if elegant journal into a powerful, somewhat doleful, environmental monograph.
This is a beautifully done book with many fascinating photographs of rainforest topography and the diverse life forms which abide therein. The accompanying text is well-written and consistently informative and interesting. But the overarching theme here is that pristine environments which are critical to the survival of untold species of flora and fauna are in jeopardy. Grave jeopardy. Moreover, the McAllisters take great pains to point out that the small islands of preserved and protected ecosystem created in compromise between commercial interests and environmentalists are insufficent to protect wildlife (bears, for example) that depend upon an interlinked vastness of unspoiled terrain in which to flourish.
So this book is as much an alarm and a plea for action as it is a wondrous presentation of its picturesque subject matter. As such, it is urgent reading for those of us concerned about the ravages unleashed when a society values short-term economic advantage (as when untouched river valleys are clear-cut by logging companies) over the work nature takes eons to complete.
