Johnson shows how the Matsigenka, whose home is the Amazon rainforest, are able to meet virtually all their material needs with the skills and labor available to the individual household. They try to raise their children to be independent and self-reliant, yet in control of their emotional, impulsive natures, so that they can get along in intimate, cooperative living groups. Their belief that self-centered impulsiveness is dangerous and self-control is fulfilling anchors their moral framework, which is expressed in abundant stories and myths. Although, as Johnson points out, such people are often described in negative terms as lacking in features of social and cultural complexity, he finds their small-community lifestyle efficient, rewarding, and very well adapted to their environment.

Life saver

I really was very close to an emotional mental/physical breakdown at some points during my dissertation & this book let me know that no matter how alone I felt, I was not alone. Other people actually DID know what I was going through. Good use of humor too. Read BEFORE you embark on this last step, it will help to prepare you. Remember the "P" in PhD is for perseverance.

A disappointing whodunnit

The story was not well fleshed out and would've benefited from the author providing more details on brothers and the "heroine", Gabrie I think if more background information had been provided, I might have cared about the characters. As it was, it was a disappointing mystery.

SPOILER ALERT: it aggravated me that Gabrie kept her inheritance fully intending to benefit from it, without any thought of giving it to the brothers. The money was intended to compensate her for what Darren supposedly did to her and her mother. Knowing neither brother did her harm AND keeping the money reeked of greed and selfishness.

Needs more of everything

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I will state at the outset: I dislike cliffhangers. That being said, being able to read all three segments in one "go" was a real plus.

The premise was interesting, but a bit hard to follow at times. I wish there had been more explanation of the connection between Gabrie and Cross Falls (Hampton Falls) from the beginning. The murder of her mother, Lily, is vaguely alluded to, and it isn't developed well enough to become an interesting point to keep in mind as the tale progressed. What motivated Gabrie to go to Hampton Falls? It wasn't made clear, and this ambiguity carried throughout the book. The tale felt thin in many places, and the characters didn't have much depth. The entire book felt as if I was reading a summary of a really good story, instead of being able to fully immerse myself in an engrossing tale. I admit that I did not suspect the perp until just before he tipped his hand.

Though they broke up a long time ago, Gabrie feels something the moment Darren opens the door. He looks better than ever and there's a spark she didn't remember.
Until she finds out she had sex with his twin Jack. And if that's not confusing enough for her, apparently their history is.
Things get worse and Gabriel is forced to face the past and ask some unwanted questions. One of which is who does she really want?

About the Author
Ray Zee was born and raised in New Jersey, and spent his college years in the East as well. Unlike other students, Ray did more than just study. He began to gamble on the side in school, and when he graduated he was ready to start his career, which just happened to be in the dessert of Nevada.

Ray quickly realized that there were many opportunities in various forms of gambling and began to search for ways to exploit the inequities in many of the games. This included blackjack, horse racing, sports betting, slot jackpots, and of course his favorite game, poker.

It wasn’t long before he became known as one of the top poker players and most knowledgeable gamblers in the world. And when we say world, we mean it literally because there are very few places where gambling is offered that Ray has not visited. In fact, you can go to many cardrooms all over the world, mention the name Ray Zee, and get an immediate response.

Ray usually chooses to play in very high stakes cash games, many of which feature some of the best players in the world. It has been said that "He leaves them with their eyes wide open when he departs." Ray is also one of the very few players that is considered expert in virtually every form of poker played for serious money. He is also one of the very few gamblers (still around) that attended the World Series of Poker Tournaments at Binion’s Horseshoe Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas during all of its early years.

Rays book, High-Low-Split Poker for Advanced Players is recognized as the premier book on split pot games, and this has increased his following and helped to promote these games as well. He is considered an invaluable member of the Two Plus Two Publishing team, and his advice and wisdom is widely sought by many of his peers and adversaries at the gaming tables.

Typical 2+2 book: thought-provoking, but a little short on hard data

I originally bought this 'cause I've been playing seven-card stud and was curious about Stud/8, but reading the Omaha/8 section motivated me into learning it first.

I've read most of the relevant 2+2 Publishing poker books (and some of the irrelevant ones) and this seems fairly typical of the genre. They don't tend to give specific advice about specific hands, but describe strategy in more general terms and help players to start asking the right questions.

The Stud/8 half is more comprehensive than the Omaha/8 half, but I feel both sections give pretty decent introductions to their respective games. While they don't, for example, list specific starting hands (a common complaint) I didn't have any trouble figuring out what to play; the beginning chapter in each section goes into the this in sufficient detail. They're "for advanced players" but I didn't have any trouble understanding any of them, and I'm most definitely a fishy newbie when it comes to poker.

I really appreciate the "question and answer" sections. The questions serve as helpful reminders, which is exactly what they're supposed to be. If there's a question you don't understand, it's easy to hop back to the relevant section in the main text and read in more detail what he's talking about.

My biggest issue, and it's a common problem with most of the 2+2 books, is the lack of basic information like hand probabilities. I find this surprising because of the emphasis placed in their books (Sklansky's Theory of Poker et al) on probability math in general and issues such as pot odds. If you don't know how likely it is your hand will hold up or what the chances are of, say, hitting a flush, it's nearly impossible to determine if you're getting enough of a return to make a call/bet worthwhile.

In general I think their books could be much better, but I must admit they're currently the most rigorous introduction to poker play I've been able to find. If you're just starting out with Stud/8 or Omaha/8, or you're an intermediate player looking for ways to improve, I think Ray Zee's book will be useful. If you're hoping for a "gentle" introduction to these games you're in the wrong place--and you might want to rethink your poker career, because poker isn't and never will be all that easy to learn.

Other suggestions: Bob Ciaffone's Omaha book has a practical section on Omaha/8, and I believe the latest version goes into it in even more detail. He's an excellent writer and his books are well worth checking out.

You might also try Tenner and Krieger, but I wasn't that impressed. Cappeletti's Omaha book is a jumbled mess, it gives me a headache just to look at it. The SS/2 section isn't awful, but can be summed up as: "always draw to the nuts, play good starting hands".

The grandaddy of hi/lo books

"High-Low Split Poker" was, for most of it's existence, the *only* book out there on Omaha and hi/lo 7-card stud. When I started playing Omaha a few years ago, this was the only book I could find on the subject. I think that is why most people who are looking at it today, in the context of the burgeoning popularity of poker (particularly hold'em) and poker literature, are giving it mixed reviews. At the time the book was written, poker, and especially Omaha, were not nearly as popular as they are in 2004. Omaha is still dragging way behind hold'em as the most popular poker game in casinos mainly because it is a much slower game, is much more complex (in my view), and just isn't as 'sexy' as Texas hold'em. Could you imagine them making a movie like 'Rounders' centered on an Omaha game? No one would watch.
True, only half of this book is dedicated to Omaha, and Zee tries to cover a great deal of material in a small amount of space - which will inevitably lead to short cuts. But as a beginning Omaha book that leads the reader from the basics all the way to some advanced theory, this book has no rival. If you are serious about learning how to play Omaha, start with this book.
For those complaining that only half the book deals with Omaha, the reason hi/lo stud was lumped together with Omaha is because most people who start to play Omaha will find they also enjoy hi/lo stud if they give it a chance. Hi/lo stud is rarely found in casinos (at limits lower than $10/$20), but is very popular in home games due to its ability to keep players in the hand and make pots large -- allbeit usually split.
The upshot of this review: new books on Omaha are appearing frequently and some may be better than this one (I don't know, I haven't read them all yet), but this is where hi/lo theory all began and for that reason alone belongs on any serious Omaha player's bookcase.

Two books for the price of one! But only one good book.

The Stud Hi/Lo split section is very specific, and very enlightening. It is definitely a section that I would not want my opponents to read. Many specific situations are covered, and the logic behind the actions he recommends is clear. It's clearly superior to any advice I've previously read on the topic.

The Omaha section is only okay. The Super/System 2 section is better, and "Winning Omaha 8 or Better" by Mark Tenner is best. Ray Zee seems to just kind of pull percentages out of thin air when discussing Omaha/8 strategy (one section discussing redraws is just ridiculous), and kind of falls into the trap that pre-flop raising is just silly in O8. However, the advice isn't as fallacious as some that I've seen on the internet (i.e. Full Tilt's ridiculous propagation of Matusow's "live high cards" blunder)

Overall, totally worth the time, especially if you don't feel like tracking down a separate book on O8.

A student's take

I bought this book to kick start my research for my senior independent study on jury consultants and their effects on the justice system. I was not dissapointed. The bibliography alone is worth the price of admission. The author cites authorities on persuasion, jury psychology, group dynamics, cognition, rhetoric, among numerous other topics.

The other benefit to this book is that it is extremely well organized and delineated. I did not have to read all 600 pages from cover to cover in order to write my paper. I could peer into the chapters which pertained to the section I was working on and the information was very easy to find. I can imagine how useful this would be for an attorney who was working on his/her opening statement and find the relevant pieces of information.

All in all this book is exceptionally in depth. I managed to write a 78 page paper and this book was cited on nearly every single page. Dr. Waites manages to pack that much information into this book. If you're interested in the art of persuasion, rhetoric, trial consulting, or want to improve your skills in any of the above you definitely want to buy this book. Easy to read, very in-depth, and very good overview of the dominant scientific and authoritative literature on trial science.

I had heard a lot about this book before reading it. Now, after reading it, I see that this is not just another trial advocacy book. It will challenge you to think about courtroom persuasion in new ways.
You can tell that the author is an expert in traditional trial advocacy technique. However, he focuses on the psychology of decision makers in a way that will make you think more carefully about how to persuade them. If you are expecting this book to read like any other trial advocacy text, you will be surprised. If you want new information that can make you more successful in the courtroom, you will be pleased. If you want just another book that restates outdated ideas about trial advocacy, you won't find it here.
The book contains 600 pages and 18 chapters. It is well organized so that you can read the parts that you need and then keep it nearby for reference as new problems come up in different court cases. About half the chapters are focused on applying psychological information to traditional trial advocacy topics, such as opening statement, fact and expert witness testimony, demonstrative aids, closing argument, bench trials, arbitration advocacy, and even mediation advocacy.
However, the rest of the chapters provide information on the psychology of communication, scientific studies of juror perceptions, as well as designing and analyzing scientific research studies of judges, juries, and arbitrators in your own cases. For example, in the chapter on juror perceptions, there are separate discussions of juror perceptions of liability and damages issues in personal injury, products liability, medical malpractice, employment, patent, copyright, trademark, and many other types of cases.
Throughout the book, the author discusses his personal insights from 20 years of practicing law and psychology in the courtroom. He obviously knows what he is talking about. He uses case analogies throughout the book to illustrate his points. However, having become jaded over the years, I took some comfort in seeing that his ideas are supported throughout the book. In addition, the book contains commentary from a number of trial judges and trial attorneys at major firms that provide additional ideas and support to the author's work.
The greatest strength of this book is the blending of well accepted trial advocacy principles to scientific information used in the field of psychology. From the outset, the author makes his premise clear: trial attorneys, corporate counsel, and their clients will be more successful in the courtroom when they orient their case presentations to the actual perceptions of the judges, jurors, and arbitrators they are trying to persuade. The rest of the book is dedicated to showing you how to do just that.

Chuck Toporek cut his teeth on a Mac II system when he got his first job in publishing in 1988, and has been using them ever since. Chuck is a senior editor in charge of the Mac OS X/Apple Developer Connection (ADC) series for O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. He is also the author/editor of the Mac OS X Panther Pocket Guide, co-author of Mac OS X in a Nutshell, and author of the upcoming title, Inside .Mac.

Chris Stone (cjstone@mac.com) is a Senior Systems Administrator (the Mac guy) at O'Reilly & Associates and coauthor of Mac OS X in a Nutshell. The Definitive Guide to Panther

The publisher, O'Reilly Media, seems dedicated to covering Apple's OSX operating system, OSX, from every conceivable vantage point. Its "Missing Manual" series on Panther is a user's reference on how to use the operating system and its applications for productivity and fun. Its "Hacks" series provides dozens of tips, guides, and project ideas. In the "Nutshell" series iteration, "MacOSX Panther in a Nutshell" designs to provide in-depth, comprehensive information about the inner workings of the OS. It is for power users and developers who want to master the OS and have the fullest description and explanation of OSX.

This book starts out detailing the multi-layered architecture of OSX and illuminates its power and elegance. In great depth and detail, it explains the Unix components, Aqua elements, OS9 and Classic, the Finder, and the multitude of Unix services, daemons, and applications.

This is terse, descriptive prose. The authors focus a sharp telephoto lens on the skeleton, sinews, and pores of OSX, starting with basic elements and probing deep into the details of the file system, networking components, directory services, printing configurations and more. This in-depth description and large handfuls of guides and tips totals over 1,000 pages.

A separate part of the book is devoted to Applescript, X-code tools, and Java. The X-code tools are for developers. Part IV is all about Unix, including three chapters on "shells" alone, plus sections on text editors, the X-Window system, and a full 262 pages of Unix command references, touted as the most complete such source in print publication.

No mere user manual would have ten pages devoted solely to understanding and managing preference files, or five pages on using the Colorsync feature with Quartz filter scripts.

Surprisingly, only ten pages are dedicated to security issues. Although the Mac is known to be extremely secure, recent news shows even the Mac is vulnerable to sophisticated exploits.

About the Author
William A. Haviland is professor emeritus at the University of Vermont, where he founded the Department of Anthropology and taught for 32 years. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and has conducted research in archaeology in Guatemala and Vermont; ethnography in Maine and Vermont; and physical anthropology in Guatemala. This work has been the basis of many publications in national and international books and journals, as well as in trade publications. His books include The Original Vermonters, co-authored with Marjorie Power, and a technical monograph on ancient Maya settlement. He served as consultant for the award-winning telecourse Faces of Culture, and he is co-editor of the series Tikal Reports, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Dr. Haviland has lectured to many professional and non-professional audiences in Canada, Mexico, Lesotho, South Africa, and Spain, as well as in the United States. A staunch supporter of indigenous rights, he served as expert witness for the Missisquoi Abenaki of Vermont in a case over aboriginal fishing rights. Dr. Haviland received the University Scholar award by the Graduate School of the University of Vermont in 1990; a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sovereign Republic of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, St. Francis/Sokoki Band in 1996; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont in 2006. Now retired from teaching, he continues his research, writing, and lecturing from the coast of Maine and serves as a trustee for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, focused on Maine's Native American history, culture, art, and archaeology. His most recent books are At the Place of the Lobsters and Crabs (2009) and Canoe Indians of Down East Maine (2012).

Harald E.L. Prins is a University Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Kansas State University (KSU). Academically trained at half a dozen Dutch and U.S. universities, he came to the U.S. as a List Fellow at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He has taught at Radboud University (Netherlands), as well as Bowdoin College and Colby College in Maine, and as a visiting professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. He has received numerous honors for his teaching, including the Conoco Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in 1993, Presidential Award in 1999, Coffman Chair of Distinguished Teaching Scholars in 2004, Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year for Kansas in 2006, and the AAA/Oxford University Press Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology in 2010. His fieldwork focuses on indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere, and he has long served as an advocacy anthropologist on land claims and other native rights. In that capacity, Dr. Prins has been a lead expert witness in both the U.S. Senate and Canadian federal courts. He has refereed for 40 academic book publishers and journals. His own numerous academic publications appear in nine languages, with books including The Mi'kmaq: Resistance, Accommodation, and Cultural Survival (Margaret Mead Award finalist). Also trained in filmmaking, he served as president of the Society for Visual Anthropology, and has coproduced award-winning documentaries. He has been the visual anthropology editor of American Anthropologist, co-principal investigator for the U.S. National Park Service, international observer in Paraguay's presidential elections, and a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Carol Ann (Bunny) McBride is an award-winning author specializing in cultural anthropology, indigenous peoples, international tourism, and nature conservation issues. Published in dozens of national and international print media, she has reported from Africa, Europe, China, and the Indian Ocean. With an MA from Columbia University, she is highly rated as a teacher and has taught at the Salt Institute for Documentary Field Studies and as visiting anthropology faculty at Principia College. Since 1996, she has been an adjunct lecturer of anthropology at Kansas State University. Her many publication credits include the books Women of the Dawn, Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris, and Our Lives in Our Hands: Micmac Indian Basketmakers; chapters in multiple books; and several co-authored books, including Indians in Eden and The Audubon Field Guide to African Wildlife. Working on a range of issues and projects with Maine Indian tribes since 1981, McBride received a commendation from the Maine state legislature for her research and writing on the history of Native women. Boston Globe Sunday Magazine featured a profile about her, and Maine Public Television made a documentary about her work on Molly Spotted Elk. Recently, she served as investigator for a National Park Service ethnography project and curated several museum exhibits. Her exhibit, "Indians & Rusticators," received a Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History (2012). She currently serves as president of the Women's World Summit Foundation based in Switzerland, and is wrapping up two books (with co-author Harald Prins): From Indian Island to Omaha Beach: Charles Norman Shay, Penobscot Indian War Hero; and Native Americans in Seacoast Maine: A Natural and Cultural History of Mount Desert Island.

Dana Walrath, an award-winning writer, artist and anthropologist, is a faculty member of University of Vermont's College of Medicine. After earning her PhD in medical and biological anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught there and at Temple University. Dr. Walrath broke new ground in paleoanthropology through her work on the evolution of human childbirth. She has also written on a wide range of topics related to gender in paleoanthropology, the social production of sickness and health, sex differences, genetics, and evolutionary medicine. Her work has appeared in edited volumes and in journals such as Current Anthropology, American Anthropologist, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Anthropology Now. Her books include Aliceheimer's, a graphic memoir, and Like Water on Stone, a verse novel. She developed a novel curriculum in medical education at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine that brings humanism, anthropological theory and practice, narrative medicine, and professional skills to first-year medical students. She has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has exhibited her artwork in North America and Europe. Her recent work in the field of graphic medicine combines anthropology with memoir and visual art. Spanning a variety of disciplines, her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Vermont Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She spent 2012-2013 as a Fulbright Scholar at the American University of Armenia and the Institute of Ethnography and Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. She is working on a second graphic memoir that combines her Aliceheimer's work with her fieldwork on aging and memory in Armenia.

Fascinating!

This book was ordered for my mother, who needed it for an Anthropology course she was auditing. She thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and found it very useful for her coursework. The price was great, the condition of the book was more than acceptable, and the vendor shipped it in time for the start of her class. Definitely a great investment!

its the correct textbook the Professor required for the class.
Six chapters in now and in my opinion the authors are not descriptive enough in explaining details of key items. Luckily the professor is able to clarify the vagueness of the text.
