About the Author
Krishna G. Palepu is the Ross Graham Walker Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean for International Development at the Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Prior to assuming his current administrative position, Professor Palepu held other positions at the school, including Senior Associate Dean, Director of Research, and Chair, Accounting and Control Unit. Professor Palepu's current research and teaching activities focus on strategy and governance. In the area of strategy, his recent focus has been on the globalization of emerging markets. In the area of corporate governance, Professor Palepu's work focuses on how to make corporate boards more effective, and on improving corporate disclosure. Professor Palepu teaches these topics in several HBS programs aimed at members of corporate boards: "How to make corporate boards more effective, "Audit Committees in the new era of governance, "Compensation Committees: Preparing the challenges ahead." Professor Palepu has done extensive research on mergers and acquisitions and corporate disclosure. Based on this work, he coauthored the book, Business Analysis and Valuation: Text and Cases, which won the American Accounting Association's Wildman Award for its impact on management practice, as well as the Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award for its impact on academic research. This book, translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish, is widely used in leading MBA programs all over the world. Professor Palepu has a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration.

Paul M. Healy is James R. Williston Professor of Business Administration, and Unit Head, Accounting and Management, at Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Professor Healy joined Harvard Business School as a Professor of Business Administration in 1997. Professor Healy received his B.C.A. Honors (1st Class) in Accounting and Finance from Victoria University, New Zealand in 1977, his M.S. in Economics from the University of Rochester in 1981, his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Rochester in 1983, and is a New Zealand CPA. In New Zealand, Professor Healy worked for Arthur Young and ICI. Prior to joining Harvard, Professor Healy spent fourteen years on the faculty at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, where he received awards for teaching excellence in 1991, 1992, and 1997. He is the co-author of one of the leading financial analysis textbooks, Business Analysis & Valuation. In 1993-94 he served as Deputy Dean at the Sloan School, and in 1994-95 he visited London Business School and Harvard Business School. Professor Healy's research includes studies of the role and performance of financial analysts, how firms' disclosure strategies affect their costs of capital, the performance of merging firms after mergers, and managers' financial reporting decisions. His work has been published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial Economics. In 1990, his article "The Effect of Bonus Schemes on Accounting Decisions," published in Journal of Accounting and Economics, was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award. His text Business Analysis & Valuation was awarded the AICPA/AAA's Wildman Medal for contributions to the practice in 1997 and the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award in 1998.

You may want to get the 4th Edition

There are few differences between the 4th edition and this one- a few new cases being the major one. Other differences include harder-to-read line graphs (black and blue lines look almost identical- it seems as if they were trying to save money by using less colors, something further illustrated by the differences in the photographs on the covers of the respective editions: the 5th edition one looking rather monochromatic compared to the 4th), and a lack of questions at the end of the case studies. Page numbers between the 4th and 5th editions are almost identical, as is the information provided on those pages.

The operative question for a potential buyer- are additional cases on Vizio and iphone worth an extra $100? When I bought this book (5th Edition) Amazon actually had a picture of the 4th edition on this page, and the title on this webpage made no reference to the edition, so I am a little miffed about that, as the 4th edition would have worked just fine for my purposes.

The content of the chapters of the book is pretty good (4th and 5th edition), and relatively easy to understand, but non-accounting students taking a class using this book might want to get an intermediate accounting book as a supplemental text, as this book seems to assume a pretty good knowledge of accounting and financial statements.

Bottom line: unless you are hellbent on getting the new cases, get the 4th edition- both are extremely expensive, but the 4th edition, much less so.

EDIT: I feel I may have been a bit harsh above in some of my criticisms- there are actually a good bit of new cases, and another major change with the 5th edition is the additional information on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). Even still, considering the price differences, the 4th edition its worthy of consideration.

An outstanding book

This book would also be of considerable value to physicists and engineers, although the primary audience is probably economists. The approach is a thoroughly modern one of using a linear algebra approach to calculus.

The book makes no pretence about avoiding the formal definition-theorem-proof approach appropriate to a mathematician. It is not intended to be a rigorous approach. Instead, it focuses on geometric intuition and the "whys" as well as the "hows." The many excellent multi-colo(u)r diagrams are extremely helpful in explaining concepts. Although the book says that prerequisites are basic familiarity with single-variable calculus and linear algebra, the review sections on those topics are thorough enough to learn from, as long as the reader is not completely unfamiliar, by working through the carefully constructed exercises. In fact, the first chapter is, in of itself, an excellent primer on linear algebra.

My hope, for the next edition, is that the authors, having beautifully developed the vector calculus of Grad, might extend the development to Div and Curl (along the intuitive lines of Schey - Div, Grad, Curl and All That) to make the book even more appropriate to physicists/engineers.

If you want a crystal-clear exposition of multi-variable calculus, while learning linear algebra at the same time, this is THE book (and there is nothing else like it that I have seen out there). The book is wonderfully laid out, attractive to work through, and the examples and problem sets are first rate. I hesitate to say it, but I believe you will actually really enjoy the topic, whatever your previous misgivings about calculus may have been. If that is true, you will learn a tremendous amount from this book.

Edifying entertainment

James W. Henderson is the Ben H. Williams Professor of Economics at Baylor University, where his teaching and research center on health economics and policy. Buy This Book!

Wow. Just wow. This book truly blew my mind. This little guys wisdom can come from nowhere but God. I could not put this book down and I regret not buying a paper copy, I downloaded it on my Kindle. I would love to borrow it out to every one I know. I think I will be buying the actual book just for this purpose. This little boy who cannot speak verbal words delivers messages that are not explainable other than coming from above. I have gained more in sight about heaven and how God, Jesus and Holy Spirit work together than I ever learned in church. God is not a silent God and he speaks truth through this little boy.

Draws Back the Veil Between Heaven and Earth

Josiah was diagnosed with autism and his parents wondered if they would ever hear his voice again. As a toddler he lost his ability to speak, play, and socialize. Five years later Josiah composed beautiful poems about God and heaven on his iPad. No one, not even his parents, saw that coming.

Josiah's fire is a heart rending story of parents trying everything they can to help their son. The bigger story is one of faith, hope, and love. This book draws back the veil between heaven and earth just a little bit. It gives us an uncomplicated view of God and His angels through the eyes of a child. As Josiah wrote, "God is a good gift giver."

Fantastic, Insightful, Humbling...there aren't enough words!

I don't even know where to begin! I was so excited to receive my copy of Josiah's Fire. I thought I knew the journey and was anticipating insight, but I never dreamed the message that would unfold in it's pages. I laughed, cried, read in astounded silence, and prayed because of what was written and shared with us. Josiah's words have always been a bright spot for me. Whenever I seemed to have a particularly bad day for some reason a post from Tahni or from Josiah's page would pop up on my Facebook news feed and remind me God is bigger than all of this. I can't express how elated I am by this book and how much joy sharing it will bring for myself and hopefully to others. God blesses me through knowing them and I can't thank them enough for it. With love and appreciation I HIGHLY recommend this book.

P.S. I couldn't put the book down! I started reading the book at 4:00 yesterday and was almost finished by the time I went to bed last night (I finished it this morning). I don't think I've been that emotionally invested in a book for quite some time.

About the Author
Steven Heller is co chair of the MFA Design Department at the School of Visual Arts and the author of numerous books, including our bestselling Typography Sketchbooks.

Louise Fili is director of Louise Fili Ltd, a New York-based design studio specializing in logo, package, restaurant, and book design. Formerly senior designer for Herb Lubalin, Louise Fili was art director of Pantheon Books from 1978 to 1989, where she designed close to 2000 book jackets. Fili has taught and lectured on graphic design and typography, and her work is in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, and the Biblioth�que Nationale. She is a member of the Art Directors Hall of Fame, and received the medal of lifetime achievement from the AIGA.

Fili is the author of Elegantissima, published by Princeton Architectural Press. She has also written The Civilized Shopper's Guide to Florence and co-authored Italianissimo. With her husband, the design historian Steven Heller, she is co-author of Italian Art Deco, British Modern, Dutch Moderne, Streamline, French Modern, Deco Espa�a, German Modern, Design Connoisseur, Counter Culture, Typology, Stylepedia, Euro Deco, Scripts, and Shadow Type.

Deliriously pleasurable eye candy for graphic artists!

Graphic artists await with bated breath any new book by Dr. Heller and Ms. Fili... Their books are just exquisitely, knowledgeably compiled worlds of eye candy, vivid history and inspiration.

SHADOW TYPE: CLASSIC THREE-DIMENSIONAL LETTERING is another fabulous gem from these creative people: It is a lavishly illustrated compendium of a kind of treatment given to lettering and type, in the scope of this book, from the Victorian age, through Art Deco/Style Moderne, through Streamline; roughly the period of 1890---1955.

Letterforms are given a bold, three-dimensional quality as if they have been extruded into blocky forms-- the sides of these letters given a realistic shading/modeling--- then shadowed dramatically as if raked from some unseen oblique light source.

Nowadays, 3D softwares can readily create these kinds of letter treatments, but this book chronicles a time when this 3D modeling was done entirely as an illusion created by hand.

As Heller/Fili often do in their books celebrating the best of 20thc letter and poster and ad treatments, SHADOW TYPE is chaptered by how different nations employed the style in their own idiosyncratic way: American, Italian, French, German, British, then by other countries.

Americans my age-- I am 50--- will almost certainly recognize this kind of shadowed 3D lettering from the opening and closing titles of Hollywood movies of the 20thc, most prevalently during the 1930's and 1940's; something about the long dramatic shadows of this treatment is especially well-suited to the Film Noir genre.

SHADOW TYPE is a cornucopia of inspiration for modern graphic artists, designers, illustrators and signpainters...(Restaurateurs and menu designers, too) and for lovers of Art Deco, Midcentury and Streamline design.

As is often the case with the fine books of Heller & Fili, the book contains a concise, informed explanatory/historical text... followed by wall-to-wall, full-color illustrations. Their books are just all-eyecandy-all-the-time. Such a joy to peruse. It is apparent that the authentic period samples for this book have been painstakingly color corrected, so their printed versions included here are razor sharp, showing the saturated, wonderful vintage colors exactly as they appeared when new. The paper stock is rewardingly heavy, with a semigloss coating, showing off the designs as the treasures that they are.

Heller & Fili also designed the book with "full bleed" on the picture pages; no white borders intrude upon the vivid closeups of these styles; The authors want the reader to be swimming in beauty, not coldly appraising these styles intellectually.

We tend to think that "everything has improved" in modern times, with modern technologies and sensibilities; yet the wonderful, smart, stylish, hand-rendered examples presented in this book show that modern designers could do very well to study the disciplines of the past... starting with the books of Heller & Fili.

What a relief

A treat for type fans with page after page of three-dimensional lettering. This is the real thing too, not that tacky offset by a few points stuff that any pc can do. The contents come from the US, Italy, France, Germany and Britain as actual printed samples or type book pages.

Nicely Heller and Fili have extended their selection beyond printed matter by including lettering from shop fronts, packaging and movie credits. Actually this last selection could well be another book for Heller: Hollywood credit types. Three-dimensional type was very popular for titles and credits from the thirties to the fifties. The book has thirty-six examples, unfortunately only over three spreads, which make them slightly too small to appreciate the beauty of this type style.

Each page shows type that is worth studying. On page sixty-five a 1938 advertisement for Mitten's Display Lettering, a stick-on three dimensional type for exhibition stands, is cleverly revealed by lighting the letters at a low angle and creating a black shadow. Page forty-seven shows a 1910 Fulton Printing Outfit for children and produced by an outfit that had a hazy awareness of letter frequency: it only has five E's but five Q's, X's and three Z's. Page 237 has a stunning Art Deco book cover with shapes and lettering in 3D. The British chapter shows Stevenson Blake's unusual Shadow Sans, a type which is just a thick shadow, turn over the page and it shows it as colored type with the thick black shadow working beautifully.

The book is well produced using a good matt art paper. All the graphics bleed which nicely creates a sort of type specimen book look. If you are interested in printed ephemera featuring type and shadow styles in particular this is your book.

A wonderful collection

I am so pleased to have purchased this book. It is full of page after page of inspiring work. It's like a google image search for vintage ephemera, printed and bound - only you get 100% accuracy in your search results! The cover makes it seem like it's all going to be a singular era of shadow type, but inside covers many eras and styles that make use of this. I actually had never noticed so much shadow type in the vintage graphics that i love until I saw many of those examples in this book - like the ubiquitous french credit receipt. If you are inspired by a blast of visual examples (instead of instruction or scientific/detailed histories) you will love this 1-1/2" tome.
