Rommel: political lamb, desert fox.

I had read a more contemporary biography of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (lacking editorially) that failed to place this dynamic general emerging from a sufficient historical context, leaving off those traits that explain his ascent to the forefront of German military figures. Desmond Young's biography succeeds in depicting the perils and layers of the German military hierarchy, and reveals the natural instincts of Rommel in his early youth and World War I escapades that delight the reader. The biography becomes fascinating before reaching the desert campaigns of World War II, benefiting immensely from post-WWII interviews with his World War I comrades who outlived him. When you do reach the desert campaigns you expect to rely heavily on maps to follow the engagements, but the prose of Young's narrative puts you in the action. Young reveals details about Rommel's craftiness in launching attacks (like simultaneous Luftwaffe attacks to destroy minefields) despite being read in advance through Enigma or nagging supply shortages. Rommel displayed many characteristics of Chesty Puller, fearless USMC leader: leading in front; acts of personal courage; appreciation and affinity for enlisted personnel;a gentleman's code of honor. In the film biography, "The Desert Fox" all these characteristics are depicted with sparing details about his involvement in a plot to kill Hitler and his own demise. Desmond Young, again by post-war interviews, gives a lengthier summation of those events. By the end of this engrossing biography other German generals shine like General Fritz Bayerlein and General Speidel. Speidel, probably more guilty in the Hitler plot than Rommel, was able to escape the Gestapo net because of his academic gifts of a graduate degree and philosophical training, something that Rommel did not put much weight in. This biography illuminates this remarkable general,infantryman at heart, who escapes the infamy of the Nazi atrocities because of his personal code of honor and bravery. His notable contemporaries' accounts are mentioned that can only be worthwhile to any military historian as well. Rommel, no backroom general here, is merely courageous, invincible and resilient, not to be forgotten.

Over 100 Five Star reviews in less than a day?

Pro: It has a lot of great information for people who are new to dieting and exercise.
Easy to read. The split into different chapters you can read without having to read the whole book was a smart choice.
Simple programs.

Con: All the information isn't exactly new or just in this book. For example, the diet is Paleo, which is fine, but not what I expected from the ads. I really hoped for something new here, and what is new sounds dubious at best.
Some of the claims in the books description are a little exaggerated.
The work out is not the best. It's great if you are new to working out, but it's not enough for someone who is already athletic and looking to improve. If you want to be the best athlete you can, this will take you far but it will not get you there.
Reversing permanent injuries can be expensive.

I have a problem with his scientific method. He did a lot of these experiments only on himself, and one after another in a short period of time. His results might be skewed. I'm currently applying a few of his suggestions and have been for 2 weeks. I will update this review in the future if there is any radicle change, but as of now nothing has really happened.

I also do not like that this book has gotten so many perfect reviews so quickly, and that critical reviews are being removed.

All in all, the book is grand if you need to be introduced to the word of nutrition and exercise. But if you have read widely on the subjects already and looking for something different and radically new, this book doesn't really deliver.

Flat out does not work!

I really felt compelled to write a review because, among the 1 star reviews I feel like not many people actually tried the diet. I tried this for a month. Really, against my better judgement but, I like other people here saw him on Dr. Oz and thought I would give it a try.Yes, his personality (which comes out over the course of the book) is quite repellant and he does border on douche material, but I chose to ignore that and proceed anyway. First of all the book is horribly disorganized and not very user friendly. There aren't any summaries at the end of chapters. You really have to take notes and organize a plan yourself. Fine, I did that but, it is easy to leave something out and after the first week I realized I wasn't doing it completely right.

Anyway I got on track and I have to say that while the diet will make you lose weight, during the week. The binge made me gain it all back. During my binge day I did all the excersises and drank coffee, yerba mate and kombucha. grapefruit juice (phewww!) as perscribed. But, every week I would gain back the 4 lbs. I lost during the week (in one day!). Trust me the binge day is no treat because, it is so time consuming. I didn't have time do anything, because of all the things you have drink, the exercises, the supplements and the eating every 3-4 hours. I don't know why I kept with it as long as I did. I kept thinking that maybe it would change and that all those 5 star reviewers had success. Worse yet the diet makes you INCREDIBLY constipated! And I have never had a problem in that department. At one point during the diet I went an entire week without going. This diet was a horrible waste of time. And worst of all I keep thinking about all those cold showers/ice baths I had to suffer through. It really pisses me off! I really hope people read the one star reviews and realize that those 5 star reviews have got to be completely phony!

Consult a doctor before doing anything in this book

Tim Ferris starts his book: "Please don't be stupid and kill yourself. It would make both of us unhappy. Consult a doctor before doing anything in this book."
The first rule of medicine is do no harm. I'm an M.D. Take him at his word.
In his chapter on "reversing permanent injuries," Tim explains how he went to a doctor in Arizona who injected him with "everything but the kitchen sink." The final cocktail included platelet-rich plasma, stem cell factor, bone morphogenic protein 7, and insulin growth factor 1. The result was emergency surgery at UCSF following a staph infection in his elbow. He still thinks the medication was right, but "I didn't find the right person to administer it."
Does he have any idea what all that stuff could do to his immune system?
The reason for his attempt at regenerative medicine - many injuries. His "pushing the envelope" had produced 20 fractures, 20 dislocations, two joint surgeries and innumerable tears and sprains. His orthopedist told him (p.297) that he was "a 30 year old in a 60 year old body."
Before you buy his book, consider Tim's own history.
There is excellent advice here on motivation, an excellent chapter by Ben Goldacre on what really happens in drug research, many provocative ideas. But a diet suggesting mandatory bingeing? Sleeping effectively two hours a day? For those attracted by his video which promises "you can do the impossible," I would ask this - consider what the impossible might do to you.

Kindergarten-Grade 3–This atmospheric story continues the tale begun in The Island-below-the-Star (Houghton, 1998) of five Polynesian brothers who "discovered" the Hawaiian Islands. This time, the youngest, Manu, spots what he thinks is a wounded dog near the water's edge. Closer inspection reveals it to be a seal. After nursing the animal back to health, Manu and Dog-of-the-Sea-Waves play together and make mischief while the older brothers prepare for the long journey home. When they set sail at last and stop at one of the islands in the chain, an earthquake erupts and general chaos ensues. Manu is lost at sea, and his "dog" appears to rescue him. This story, unlike the first, lacks a clear focus and tends to meander from one notion to another. The expressive watercolor illustrations help to tell the tale. However, they, too, ramble a bit aimlessly, with one blue-purple wash after another. A regional natural history element is introduced on most spreads, giving readers a taste of Hawaii's diverse flora and fauna. An afterword gives a summary of each organism. The Hawaiian text is appended. Although reading like a legend, Dog-of-the-Sea-Waves is, after all, a fictitious account pieced together. All the brothers except Manu, who misses the familiarity of his home island, are delighted. Then Manu discovers a wounded seal, which he nurses back to health and names "Dog-of-the-Sea-Waves." His brothers scold him for spending time with the animal instead of helping with the daily work until "Dog-of-the-Sea-Waves" saves Manu's life in the violent waves caused by a volcanic eruption. Rumford's poetic story loses momentum in some rambling, loose passages, but children will enjoy Manu's bond with his animal friend, and Rumford's attention to Hawaiian culture and language is a rare treat (a Hawaiian translation of the story is appended). Also included are a map of the islands and notes about the native plants and animals featured in the dramatic, atmospheric watercolors. This isn't a necessary purchase, but it's an interesting addition to the slim offerings about Hawaii for the picture-book crowd. Gillian Engberg

This book is a treasure. The illustrations are glorious depictions of natural Hawaii. The book is wonderful, interesting reading about the Hawaiian islands and how people came to be here, and also for its sweet story about a young boy befriending an animal. Like all of Rumford's books, kids will love it for the story and the great illustrations, and parents will enjoy reading (and rereading) it too because he adds so much interesting, historical information along the way and in endnotes. Anyone with any interest in Hawaii at all should have this book in their collection (child OR adult). I highly recommend it.

Since Germany's armies have been all but disbanded, he joins the paramilitary Freikorps - groups of veterans who refuse to lay down their arms, and who have pledged to stop the Communists - and begins fighting, first in the streets of Germany's cities, and then in the Baltic states, defending Germany's eastern frontiers from Communist subversion while ignoring the calls to disengage by the meek politicians at home. After months of intense fighting abroad, the Freikorps soldiers return to settle scores with their enemies in Germany, dreaming of a nationalist counter-revolution, and, their trigger fingers still itchy, fix their sights on bringing down the hated new government once and for all... The Outlaws is a chronicle of the experiences of the men who fought in the Freikorps, but it is also an adventure and a war story about an entire generation of soldiers who loved their homeland more than peace and comfort, and who refused to accept defeat at any price. "What we wanted we did not know; but what we knew we did not want. To force a way through the prisoning wall of the world, to march over burning fields, to stamp over ruins and scattered ashes, to dash recklessly through wild forests, over blasted heaths, to push, conquer, eat our way through towards the East, to the white, hot, dark, cold land that stretched between ourselves and Asia - was that what we wanted? I do not know whether that was our desire, but that was what we did. And the search for reasons why was lost in the tumult of continuous fighting." - p. 65 Ernst von Salomon (1902-1972) was one of the writers of the German Conservative Revolution of the 1920s. Like the narrator of The Outlaws, he was a military cadet at the end of the First World War, and joined the Freikorps, participating in many of the events described in the book, including the assassination of Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau, for which he was imprisoned. He went on to write many books and film scripts.

Freikorps literature: Ernst von salomon

This book gives an excellent idea of the emotions of the German Freikorps fighters. Von Salomon sums it up with the phrase"What we knew we did not want, What we wanted we did not know". His military 'career' ends with him taking part in a political murder(of Walter Rathenau, a jew) and he spends a long term in prison. An excellent book on the mindset of the right wing in Germany before Hitler. Later von Salomon wrote a history of the Freikorps units and after WWII an apoligia called The Questionaire. Good stuff for those interested in the period.
