Jack Vance is one of the greats of science fiction. He has been writing for more than 60 years, and in 1997 was honored as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America. He is the author of dozens of science fiction and fantasy novels, including the World Fantasy Award winning Lyonnesse series, and the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning "The Last Castle," He lives in Oakland, California.

A Charming Changeling

Madouc, the third book in Vance's Lyonesse Trilogy, is probably the best. The first two books, Suldrun's Garden and The Green Pearl, are wonderful, but the title character, Madouc, and her search for her pedigree, are among the most charming characters and quests in fantasy. She steals the show.
Casimir, the relentlessly scheming king of Lyonesse, has learned the child he thought was his grandaughter, Madouc, is in fact a fairy changeling. That is somehow wrapped up in the mystery of Dhrun, son of King Ailias of Troicenet, of whom it was prophecied by a magic mirror that he would be the king of all the Elder Isles. Not if Casimir can help it. He wants that throne for himself.
And there are much larger, darker schemes afoot, as the evil magician Tamurello and the mysterious witch Desmei plot against Murgen, the Elder Isle's greatest wizard, who alone keeps the Elder Isles from sinking into the sea.
And into this web of political and magical intrigue wanders Madouc, determined to learn her pedigree, possessed of a bit of her fairy mother's magic and a truly wonderful charm all her own. It is Madouc who sets this novel apart from other fantasies. Vance does a splendid job creating a central figure who will beguile and amaze you.
Vance blends myths from half a dozen cultures into a seamless whole. The Elder Isles are saved, if at a terrible cost. The kingship is resolved, after a terrible war. And Madouc even learns her pedigree. The book is full of surprises, and sly references to other legends. As just one example, you will learn how the Holy Grail got to where Sir Gallahad could find it...
You should read the whole Trilogy. If for some reason you cannot, read Madouc. It's a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful trilogy.

Fantasy-lovers, take heed! Madouc is third in one of the greatest fantasy trilogies ever written. You will fall in love with the fairy changeling/royal princess whose search for her heritage takes you on a merry chase. Read all three of the Lyonesse books by Jack Vance-you won't regret it. A note: Madouc won the award for Grand Fantasy in the year 1990.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lyonesse

Well, here's the finale of Jack Vance's Lyonesse, and I'm sorry to see it end. This novel was about Madouc, the changeling princess of Lyonesse, and her interactions with Casmir, Sollace, Aillas, Dhrun, Shimrod, Throbius, Sir Pom-Pom, Umphred, Twisk, et al.

Madouc maintains the quality of this excellent trilogy -- it's filled with clever prose, charming characters, and lots of imagination. Jack Vance's careful planning produced a tight plot and Madouc wrapped up all the loose ends from Suldrun's Garden and The Green Pearl.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lyonesse, but it may not be for everyone. It occurs to me that these books are a lot like Monty Python. They're fast-paced, weird, silly, outrageous, and (somehow) smart.

I'll give you one example: the magician Murgen realizes he's being spied on by someone who is disguised as a moth, so he sends Rylf to follow the moth and find out who it is. The moth flies away and joins a thousand other moths who are flying around a flame. As Rylf watches, one of the moths eventually drops down, turns into a man, and walks into an inn. But Rylf doesn't take note of the man because, as he figures, the laws of probability suggest that the particular moth he's after must still be flying around the flame.

If you don't find that hilarious, you may not enjoy Lyonesse as much as I did.

Part of what I love most about Jack Vance's humor is that he doesn't tell us it's funny. It's a completely deadpan delivery. So, when King Throbius (King of the Fairies) assures Madouc that "fairies are as tolerant as they are sympathetic," there's no narrator or character who explains to Madouc (and, thereby, us) that this does not mean that fairies are tolerant. I have never read any author who does this as beautifully as Jack Vance does, and I loved it.

A rare great engineering book that can be understood.

Higgins shows how atomic structure influences material properties. The first three chapters "The Atom", "The Molecule", "The Crystal", give the best explanation I've ever read about atomic structure, as good or better than does the famous teacher Feynman. The rest of the book is a theoretical overview that goes deep enough to explain the key points of how metals, plastics, composites, and ceramics are different from one another. Most every sentence counts so read carefully. The progress is simple though and puts to shame most American texts on the subject. The math is minimal and included mainly to support the theory in the text. After reading the text you will have a overview of the key information necessary to use various materials. A truly great book. It is no wonder that professional auto racing such as Formula 1 and even the making of most top race cars for American open wheel racing such as for IRL and CART is done in England where the author Higgins lives. It is a true shame that in American colleges books like this which do such a fine job of explaining basic concepts are usually passed by in favor of books giving mathematical spaghetti that explains poorly due to not explaining the individual steps of the math. Thank you Higgins for one of the greatest books I've read on engineering.

About the Author
Chad States earned a BA from Evergreen State College and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. States was an Artist in Residence at Light Work in the summer of 2009 and received the Emerging Artist Fellowship for the Delaware Division of the arts in 2008. His work has been exhibited at venues nationwide including Hous Projects, New York; Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle; and FLUXspace, Philadelphia, among others. His works are part of the permanent collections of Light Work in Syracuse, New York well as the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn
University in Auburn, Alabama. States currently lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Gordon Brent Ingram, Ph.D. is a scholar and practitioner of environmental planning and design. Much of his work has involved either conservation initiatives by indigenous and other tribal communities or sexual minorities increasingly engaged with decision-making around public space. His 1989 Ph.D. in Environmental Planning was awarded in the College of Environmental Design of the University of California, Berkeley and he has taught and held appointments at Berkeley, Santa Cruz and The University of British Columbia, among other institutions. He has written for numerous publications and was the editor of Queers in Space: Communities | Public Places | Sites of Resistance (Bay Press, 1997).

Alec Soth is a photographer whose work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and S�o Paulo biennials. In 2010, the Walker Art Center produced a large survey exhibition of Soth’s work entitled From Here to There. Alec Soth’s first monograph, Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published by Steidl in 2004. Since then Soth has produced many books, most recently Broken Manual (Steidl, 2010). In 2008, Soth started his own publishing company, Little Brown Mushroom.

A marriage then...

I just finished Private Life and then read a number of reviews (not just on Amazon). I am always struck by how contemporary readers judge women characters and their lives by current standards. The amazing thing about Private Life is how beautifully Jane Smiley (as always) has depicted a woman whose sensibilities are far from our own. Her main character is not entitled, she is not confident, she is obedient and has none of the brilliant expectations women have for their lives in our world. But even as an entitled, educated woman who has and had my own brilliant expectations for my life, I found Margaret Mayfield Early's life poignant and full of meaning. Maybe it is because I'm in my fifties and was married to a certain kind of workaholic, maybe because -- with all my self-assertion and my wonderful children and outgoing personality so different than Margaret's -- I have regrets like she does. One theme of the negative reviews I just read is that she is too much of a milquetoast and her life is dull, but anyone who has run a household can tell you that the little things that make for contentment are not necessarily the stuff of action or excitement. There's a passage in the book where Margaret follows the upbringing of some birds. She is told constantly what ordinary birds they are and yet she is so moved by them. No, not the stuff of summer blockbusters... But just what it should have been. My appreciation to Jane Smiley for taking me again to a world I could learn from.

Technically brilliant, and a good read, too

At first, after the prologue, I felt like the narrative was a bit draggy and fussy, as if somebody's grandmother were telling the story--then I got it: it is supposed to be as if someone of the time (who that is becomes clear at the very end) is telling the story. The reminiscence-like digressions and extreme attention to things like domestic details started to make sense--and then the story drew me in. This is the anti-Jane Austen--that, as a quotation suggests, in real life, things don't stop after you snag a wealthy husband. Captain Early is not so much Mr. Darcy as Mr. Rochester in demeanor, and the story feels very true-to-life, unlike the has-a-madwoman-in-the-attic-but-just-needs-the-love-of-a-good-woman stories promulgated for a good two hundred years, now. In fact, Margaret, our heroine, is a "good woman"--the sort of long-suffering wife usually relegated to the periphery. Auden said it well in Musee des Beaux Arts: suffering takes place on the edges while everyone else is living his life--his private life. We see Margaret's private life--and an interesting person she is, too.

We have here a very accurate, insightful portrait of what it must have been like to be a smart, but otherwise traditional woman in middle America at the turn of the last century--not a superstar--just smart enough, but not unusually assertive for her time--just a typically socialized example. She marries a mad, abrasive, pompous fool of a professor who many of us will recognize--the sort of flawed genius who burns bridges and offends wherever he goes. It is a delicious pleasure for the modern reader to see both how nutty he was, and how prescient. Smiley knows her academic whack jobs, for sure! Other perfectly historically accurate references are made, such as to the medicinal properties of hemp, that we will smirk at today.

Jane Smiley has given a voice to the overlooked, mousey "sainted wife." Brava!

required reading for any woman considering marrying an engineer or scientist

This is the only novel of which I am aware that tries to illuminate the experience of a non-technical woman married to a high-IQ pinhead. In other words, fantastic preparatory reading for a modern woman contemplating marriage to an engineer or scientist. Initially Margaret can't evaluate how wrong about most things her quick-minded husband is, but of course after many years of marriage she can't help seeing him clearly.

The novel moves at a stately pace and requires some effort to get into but proves rewarding.

Wings of fire

The ancient dragon Valdearg was briefly introduced in T.A. Barron's "Seven Songs." So guess what the antagonist of "The Raging Fires" is!

The third volume of this Arthurian fantasy epic introduces some nasty new beasties, magical threats and some explosive dragon action. Barron seems to have overcome his initial roughness, and allows the plot to flow as smoothly as his nature-based writing, as well as the introduction of some interesting new characters.

After barely saving his mother's life, Emrys Merlin is relaxing with his family... only to have their peace destroyed when a monstrous magic-sucking monster called a kreelix appears. They were supposedly extinct, but have somehow reappeared -- and to make matters worse, Valdearg (aka "Wings of Fire") has awakened from his slumber, and is on the warpath for whoever killed his hatchlings.

The problem is that there is a prophecy that Wings of Fire's clash with his old enemy (presumed to be a wizard) will result in both of them dying. So Merlin sets out to discover what is happening on "Fincayra's darkest day," and finds himself enmeshed with strange sorceresses, a magical conspiracy, a pair of deer-people, and eventually with the ancient dragon himself...

"The Raging Fires" sets aside the foresty Celtic symbolism of the previous two books, in favor of fire -- harps burn, lava burns, dragons blast fire, and homicidal anger rages out of control. He also seems to have exhausted his mythological store for the moment, because most of the magical goings-on in this book are pretty original creations.

Barron's writing sometimes gets a bit overlush, but it's loaded down with haunting, detailed moments (the deer-people's transformations), eerie threats, and the occasional moment of comic relief (the baby dragon). But the story is overall very grim, particularly since this is the first of Merlin's stories in which his death seems to be assured. Whether or not he will actually die, there's a dark cloud hanging over everything he does.

The biggest problem is perhaps the kreelixes -- they're an interesting idea, but they sound more like something out of Star Trek than Arthurian legend. I'm just saying.

Merlin is a little older and wiser in this one, and he seems to be feeling the first stirrings of romantic feelings for the bland deer-woman Hallia. And Valdearg is a wonderful antagonist -- he'a an aggressive killer, but he's not evil and at times he even shows signs of dignity and endearing sentiment.

"The Raging Fires" temporarily ditches the Celtic myth'n'legend, in favor of dragons and a few new inventions of the author's. A solid, richly-written fantasy.

"The Dragon Avenges His Dreams Yet Unhatched..."

The third book in T.A. Barron's Merlin saga, chronicling the adventures of the young wizard before his famous exploits in the Arthurian legends, continues on from The Lost Years and The Seven Songs of Merlin. Merlin has been reunited with his mother and sister on the magical island of Fincayra and is looking forward to continuing his learning in the magical arts. But it is not to be, for elsewhere on the island the ancient dragon Valdearg has awakened from his decades-long slumber to discover that his unhatched eggs have been destroyed - and he's not happy.

A prophesy hints that Merlin will be the one to end the scourge of the dragon - but at the cost of his own life. Furthermore, he will need the precious gemstone known as the Galator to complete his quest, a treasure that he bartered away back in the first book to save a friend's life. Further trouble arises in the form of Urnalda, a dwarf-enchantress who has the power to strip Merlin of his magical power, and the kreelix - monsters that feast on magical abilities. Beset on all sides by these opponents, Merlin struggles to complete his goals and face the terrible dragon before it's too late.

Barron keeps the story flowing at a brisk pace, helped along by the short chapters and the breezy prose. Told in first-person narration by Merlin himself, there is a sense of immediacy to the proceedings, as well as rich descriptions of the landscape and travailing of Fincayra. Old characters are present (requiring foreknowledge of the previous books) and new ones are introduced, and the tapestry of this land and its history has further layers and details added to it. Hallia takes the place of Rhia as Merlin's female companion, but the deer-woman is not quite as interesting or endearing as the forest-girl, though Valdearg the dragon (also known as "Wings of Fire") makes for an intriguing not-quite villain.

Although the knowledge that Merlin gleans and the development that he goes through is not as pitch-perfectly mapped out as that of Taran in Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain (a series that I was continually reminded of whilst reading the Merlin saga) it's clear that he's on his way to becoming the wise wizard of the legends. I can easily imagine this youth as the mentor of a future King Arthur. Though there are twists and turns throughout the story (some clever, some pedestrian) it is ultimately Merlin's kind heart that sets him apart from the rest of his kind, and Barron is clever enough to sow some seeds that will no doubt come to fruition in future books.

Young readers who enjoy the likes of Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia will probably appreciate Barron's take on a young Merlin, and though they don't *quite* reach that level of classic storytelling, they're enjoyable and well-written fantasy for the younger crowd. "The Fires of Merlin" suffers a little from middle-book syndrome, with what with a lot of follow-on from previous books and set-up for future installments, but will have readers eager to press on with The Mirror of Fate.

Be warned that this publication used to be titled The Fires of Merlin. There's bound to be some confusion, so make sure you double-check exactly what you're getting before ordering. Other than the title-change, the text remains entirely the same.
