Few books give you clear and basic info on programming. I have made it through about half the book and was very pleasantly surprised how it brought together all the various technologies used in mobile apps and explained them clearly. Very happy with this purchase.

Helps you get started but examples don't work

Not recommended. Examples must be out of date because they worked in neither platform. I found better examples online but apparently the others didn't test their code before publishing examples or put in examples that weren't simple enough to be carried over to later versions.

Not recommended for any development after 2012.

About the Author

Joanna F. DeFranco is assistant professor of software engineering and a member of the graduate faculty at The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining Penn State, she held faculty positions at Cabrini College and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She also held a number of positions in industry and government, including as an electronics engineer for the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, PA, and as a software engineer at Motorola in Horsham, Pennsylvania.

Dr. DeFranco received her BS in electrical engineering from Penn State, MS in computer engineering from Villanova University, and PhD in computer and information science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She is a member of ASEE and has had numerous publications in journals and conference proceedings. She is also on the curriculum advisory board for a local technical high school.

Phillip A. Laplante is professor of software engineering and affiliate professor of information science and technology at The Pennsylvania State University. Before joining Penn State, he was a professor and senior academic administrator at several other colleges and universities.Prior to his academic career, Dr. Laplante spent nearly eight years as a software engineer and project manager working on avionics (including the Space Shuttle), CAD (Computer Aided Design), and software test systems. He was also director of business development for a boutique software consulting firm. He has authored or edited 27 books and more than 200 papers, articles, and editorials.

Dr. Laplante received his BS, MEng, and PhD degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, and computer science, respectively, from Stevens Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Colorado. He is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of numerous professional societies, program committees, and boards. He is consultant to Fortune 500 companies, the U.S. Department of Defense, and NASA on technical and management issues. He also serves as a CIO/CEO coach.

Colin J. Neill is associate professor of software and systems engineering and associate division head of engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining Penn State, he worked as a research officer at the University of Wales Swansea, as a certified software process assessor and auditor, and as a software engineering consultant for a number of organizations in the United Kingdom and Europe. Notable experiences during this period included working on manufacturing strategies with Rover Cars and enterprise system selection, installation, and enhancement with British Aerospace.

Dr. Neill received his BEng in electrical and electronic engineering, MS in communication systems, and PhD in software and systems engineering from the University of Wales Swansea. He is a member of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and he is the author of more than 70 articles and book chapters. Additionally, he serves as a member of several journal editorial boards and academic conference committees. He conducts research for a number of companies and government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Defense and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He is a rabid fan of Philadelphia professional sports teams.

I thought I knew a lot about understanding people in my workplace based from previous project management courses. But this book adds yet another layer.

He describes the causes of the economic disaster, and then traces its impact on children and adolescents who represent a wide range of American life: hoboes, farmers, migrant workers, laborers, union organizers, and African Americans. In many cases, the narratives are culled from interviews that the author conducted as well as from archival letters written to the Roosevelts. Several offer the perspectives of unknown Americans, while others are from the writings and memories of personalities such as Gordon Parks. Black-and-white photos, most of which need no caption to tell their haunting stories, are included. For a chronicle of the entire range of Depression-era events and govenment programs, turn to Gail B. Stewart's The New Deal (Macmillan, 1993) or R. Conrad Stein's The Great Depression (Childrens, 1993) for younger readers. Milton Meltzer's Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? (Facts on File, 1990) is more extensive in that it covers the writings and reminiscences of both adults and young people from 1929-1933. With Wormser's help, readers will gain a knowledge of and appreciation for the experiences of the children of the '30s.

Drawing on interviews, letters, personal accounts, and black-and-white photographs, Wormser creates a vividly detailed narrative of what it was like to be young in the U.S. during the Great Depression. The individual voices, of children at the time and of adults looking back, bring immediacy to the history of how families lost their land, their jobs, and often their hopes. Wormser gives special attention to such topics as children at work, the plight of blacks, the labor movement, and the Civilian Conservation Corps, and one chapter about kids on the road draws on his book Hoboes. The many photographs are powerful testimony, but unfortunately there is no acknowledgment of who took the pictures or where they came from. So many things to love about this

A page-turning mystery full of family secrets, awkward relatives, believable romance and great humour. Protagonists were real but delightful (a big relief as I'm so sick of reading about characters I can't even like), and I foresee myself re-reading this often. I wish I could go in greater depth on the many nuanced things I appreciated about reading this but it would be full of spoilers - basically, a great, fun read worth much more than what it cost me

Are you looking for romance, intrigue, wickedly smart dialogue, and a healthy dose of sex appeal? Then buy this book and thank me later, after you've calmed down and maybe taken a cold shower. Rae D. Magdon delivers the story, the humor, and the heat, as she always does. Love, love, love.

Fantastic, fun read!

Fun, light hearted mystery with a great cast of characters. The main character, Jay, is totally relatable and her Aunt Mimi is a trip. Her girlfriend Nicole is interesting and a little complex, like most women, but serves as a good foil for Jay. Their relationship is sexy and fun and they are really great together. And the mystery is great, too! I didn't have the killer figured out by the end so it was a surprise. I'm a big fan of Rae's work and this one definitely did not disappoint!
