About the Author

I am REALLY teaching myself Spanish using this book

Alright, I have read all the reviews that precede mine and many of them mention the book's one major deficiency -- it has too many typos. Just one example: on page 145, the word "descubrir" ("to discover") is introduced for the first time, appearing there in the main vocabulary list of new words for Chapter 9, and it is misspelled "descrubrir", which is inexcusable. I suspected the misspelling but was not sure until I checked my dictionary and also saw the word spelled correctly in the exercises that followed. This sort of thing is unfortunate in an otherwise fine text.
That said, this book is excellent. I am learning Spanish using this book as my main text. I started studying Spanish using this book in November 2002 and have completed fourteen of its fifteen chapters. It's now the beginning of March 2003 and I am reading the news online in Spanish with almost total comprehension. I had no prior experience with Spanish.
"Practical Spanish Grammar" has many exercises in each chapter covering both vocabulary and grammar and also three major "quizzes" of a hundred questions each covering Chapters 1-5, 6-10, and 11-15. The answers to all exercises and quizzes are given in the back of the book. In my opinion, Professor Prado has done a great job of giving me just what I need (and no more or less) to master new words and new grammatical concepts. The material is presented in a manner that fixes those concepts in my head and reinforces them with the exercises that follow.
When I finish this book, I will start going through Prado's "Advanced Spanish Grammar", which recapitulates and elaborates in more depth upon almost everything presented in "Practical Spanish Grammar" and introduces new concepts besides. Plus, "Advanced Spanish Grammar" is written ENTIRELY in Spanish and, looking ahead, I have found that I already understand it.
Now, there is one more thing: if, like me, you are trying to teach yourself Spanish on your own, you will need more than this book alone. I have purchased a few bilingual books that have texts of Spanish stories on one page and the English translation on the facing page. I don't need to be constantly referring to my dictionary when I read Spanish this way, since the translation is on the facing page. It has been the combination of Prado's "Practical Spanish Grammar" with these bilingual "story books" that have helped me to make so much progress in such a short time, especially with idiomatic expressions and other vocabulary material not found in Prado's book.
Angel Flores' "First Spanish Reader" is the best place to start with these bilingual stories because it's very much designed for the beginner (although many of the stories are real sleepers). Her "Spanish Stories" book seems to be the follow-up; the Spanish is much more advanced and the stories much more interesting. Both of Flores' books have excellent glossaries. John King edited "New Penguin Parallel Texts: Short Stories in Spanish", whose stories are more contemporary in theme and idiom.
And finally, there is a lot of Spanish to be read online for free. You can read a bilingual newspaper (containing English and Spanish side-by-side) ... ("Dos Mundos" bilingual newspaper out of Kansas City).
I don't know Prado and I am not trying to sell anyone's books. I just know that, to my surprise, this approach is working for me and "Practical Spanish Grammar" has been the fulcrum for my efforts. I recommend it highly.
A proposito, in my opinion the paperback version of "The New World Spanish/English English/Spanish Dictionary" is easiest on the eyes and easiest to handle of the dictionaries I have used or examined. Buen viaje!

A dream for some, a nightmare for others...

If you are a visual, structured learner with the long-term goal of fluency, I can think of no better place to start than with PSG. The book is logically structured, comprehensive, and has linear-qualities hard to find in most texts. I probably knew ten words of Spanish when I bought this book and when I finished (five hard months later) I could get almost any point across.

I've found the language business to be a little like the gym business: "Rock hard abs in three minutes a day" is replaced by "Two months to fluency without memorization or conjugation." PSG takes the higher road, making it a serious learning tool ill-suited to the dilettante. Each chapter starts with as many as 100 vocabulary words that must be memorized before even getting into the dialog and grammar discussions. In addition, exercises (with answers in the back) must be completed at the end of each section. If you're willing to put in the time, though, this book will give you a rock-solid foundation in the language.

What bugged me? Prado's clear, concise explanations sometimes seemed a little too concise with regards to complicated subjects. The focus on S. American vs. Spanish dialects wavers constantly, exercises were sometimes lazily conceived, confusing typos and accidental repetition are common, and vocabulary is sometimes less than practical (though if you want to be a weight-loss guru or auto mechanic in Mexico, you'll be set.) Of course, there's also the issue of books teaching you to read and write a language as opposed to speaking it-but that's a limitation of the medium and not the author...

Humble suggestions for Mr. Prado. 1: Use this forum to post a hotmail address and invite people to email you with suggestions on unclear sections and editing errors (assuming you plan to write a 3rd edition of this excellent book.) 2: Bribe some of your Mexican-American students with extra credit to record the books vocabulary, dialogs, etc. and post the recordings to the CSU website in MP3 format.

Despite my nitpicking, this was, for me, the best learning tool available.

Ordered this as a supplement to a class my daughter and I were taking. Great book with lots of practice materials. We liked how the chapters have themes, so you can practice writing and speaking within themes.

charming book, gently written

This is certainly an unusual book in these days of Thrillers, Spies, and Counter-Terrorism!! Arthur's story is quietly, almost poetically written with a believable, natural rhythm, like life really is. It's odd that other reviews mention "leaves school early" as if it's an achievement. I gather, from his seeing his friends who are still IN school & looking at University: he dropped out. He left. (That's fine but an incomplete education is not a brilliant plot point.) More important is what's the right choice for Arthur, it's probably not Univ life as he finds the work with his uncle, outdoors, gaining confidence and learning about himself that summer. Frankly, my favorite part of the book with charming character development and small details like the buoy "ferry signal" across the lake. Really delightful.
Arthur goes to Europe with a duffel and guitar and meets characters, hears various chatter & diatribes, he takes it all in. Way leads on to way, and instead of a summer trip he's still there when Spring rolls around and his new friends bring him along to do the Camino de Santiago (walk across Spain). There's more, and more, the way life happens, especially if you're not much of a planner and you have no obligations. Things unfold, he listens, learns some things, rejects other things. It IS a good read, just be aware of other people's use of the word "ADVENTURES!" If you've traveled long term, if you've backpacked -- this will resonate soundly with you.

Brilliant!

Duncan Wallace’s book, ‘Arthur’s Return’ is one of those literary gems that serve as a delightful surprise that you encounter quite rarely. It surprises us with its quality, its wit, and its heart—it is the kind of book that will haunt you days after reading it.

The plot of ‘Arthur’s Return’ may be so familiar and simple—a young man who suddenly decides to do what so many of us only “fantasize” about doing during all those hours we’re bored in a place: to go out and just explore the world at large, relishing the moments of meeting other people, and learning a lot in the process. The deceptively simple plot turns out to be one rich with possibilities, as author Duncan Wallace deftly succeeds in crafting a tale that is at turns beguiling and evocatively profound.

Duncan Wallace’s writing reminds me of early David Mitchell, back in those distant halcyon days of ‘Black Swan Green’, or even of Ian McEwan in ‘First Love, Last Rites’. But Duncan, of course, has his own literary style—he has that distinct flourish, that grace and confidence informed by erudition and an emphatic understanding of humanity in all its shades of gray. Let me suffice it to say that ‘Arthur’s Return’ is simply a must-read—fans of top-notch literature must get a copy of this book. A well-deserved five-star rating for this one.

An adventure

This was an exciting book to read. Quite the adventure I must add. This book being on the adventure of “Arthur”. It definitely lived up to its expectation. The buildup of the story was amazing and refreshing. The content was original and authentic in a way I loved and laughed and enjoyed. As a matter of fact, I feel like I have lived a boring life and I definitely need to start exploring the world. The author was very deliberate with his choice of words especially using descriptive words as it helped me imagine every scene in such a powerful way. This is definitely a book that I can give a second read. The characters were also well developed and I loved interacting with them in the book. This book is a must read for the adventurous souls and essentially those that love and enjoy a good read. You won’t regret it.

Jack Harry Dempsey...a true American success story...Great read

a low key, straightforward, funny autobiography

Jack Dempsey fought several of the biggest, most controversial fights in boxing history, but you'd never know it by reading this book. His autobiography is as understated and plainspoken, as the Roger Kahn biography is elaborate and flowery. This is particularly the case where Dempsey describes his fights; he has hardly anything to say about ring strategy, or his opponents style. He just states the events leading up to the fight, then gives an account of how the fight went (I don't think he ever spent more than 3 paragraphs on that part). By comparison, I think that Kahn spent at least 30 pages, or so, on just the Willard fight. That's by no means to say that Dempsey's book isn't entertaining, or worth reading -just a remark on the book's style.
I don't think anyone would disagree, factually, with what's written in this book, but, of course, it's difficult to know how judicious he was about what he put in. As regards what he did choose to write, he doesn't whine or make excuses for any of the disasters that happened in, or out of the ring ,and there's only one person who I can recall him having anything bad to say about. To read the book, Dempsey comes off as tough, more or less affable roughneck, but also one who's willing to have a laugh at himself. There's a chapter he spends, basically making fun of the movies and plays he did and his acting ability, which is actually pretty funny. That sort of self depreciating humour is spread throughout the book.
Jack Dempsey was someone who'd worked as a coalminer, rancher, lumberjack, starving hobo prize fighter, and had ridden the rods(the narrow beams underneath a Pullman) back and forth across the country - and once with broken ribs- several times, all before he was 20. Given all that, you'd maybe not expect a wordy book that's overflowing with the author's feelings.
Anyhow, for better or worse, (I tend to lean torward the latter) we won't be seeing his kind again, I don't think, and it's a very different type of American he's been replaced with.

Midlife Alchemy: blown away how this book nails the unique challenges & potentials of the stage of life we're entering

There isn't any fluff on these pages. Every section of this book is riveting and essential for anyone who is truly ready to adopt a new context for their relationship and life.

The Hendricks cover all of the the most intense and consequential issues of mid-life: Sex; devastating losses and deaths; despair over apparent loss of creative drive; 'empty nest’; fears which have turned into long standing behaviors; the weight of past suffering; the excess weight of bodies, of routines, or of a relationship pattern that doesn't seem to ever resolve.

They go on to help us recognize the deeper roots of all of those difficult experiences, help us see how mid-life is uniquely suited for adopting some very different perspectives and commitments that change the game entirely - a new vista for relationships that, rather than sounding like ‘growing old together,’ sounds wild, exquisite, magnificent - or in their words, committing to the full bloom of our love and creativity.

Most of the book is for mid-life couples to step onto this new way of life together, though they do have a section for singles, including some recommendations for how to go about online dating in ways that shape new connections in the direction of this new context of relating.

The fact that they have lived this themselves not only shows up in their moving accounts of their own breakthroughs of the past few decades, but in the writing itself; the way they write gave me a sense of a whole new possibility for relationship and co-creation, as if I could feel and osmose the evolutionary leap now embedded in their connection. Also palpable are their tenderness, humor, and what they call the ‘genius of the relationship.' Writing together is definitely one form of the genius of their relationship!

I was especially moved by this book because, as a woman of 46, even with decades of experience in facilitating personal and relational transformation, I had in recent years experienced some very big losses, and, with all my skills, had still had not fully recovered. I had begun to experience episodes of despair, as though my most heartfelt dreams for life were either behind me, or fast departing my capacity to fulfill them. And with that, I recognized ways that my relationship had felt rudderless also.

While reading this book, I began to have a felt sense that the core of what I've most wanted is definitely not out of reach. With Gay and Kathlyn's laser-like support in navigating my exact mid-life issues, I am already finding greater ease in grieving the losses, and letting go of the shapes I thought my dreams would take, as I hook myself up again with the source of those dreams, my felt sense of love and bodily experience of creativity. Also, my partner and I have tried some of the activities in the book, and each time we do any of them, we each have wild new ahas and love tears.

A Masterful Manual to Create More Love and Creativity

Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks have written another classic! This book offers the key concepts and central practices that take you from routine to renewal and from impasse to passion. Many people I begin working with say their long term relationships are lacking in creativity, sexual passion and are full of blame. The Hendricks know that is one option but through their own relationship and supporting thousands of others, they have mapped the territory for how to create relationships that break all of the rules to create magical possibilities. I'm grateful for a book that addresses the core of all relationship issues, FEAR, and how to deal with the various versions of it that keep us in suffering. The chapter on creating the best sex ever was particularly inspiring and gave me a lot of valuable new practices.

I love the way book is organized

The information, practical skills and tools that Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks bring tot he world have been invaluable in my life. Conscious Loving Ever after continues in this vein. I love the way book is organized. Each chapter focuses on a specific topic and goes in detail as to why and how the topic (eg. creativity, presencing,integrity) are vital to loving, lasting relationships . And there are practical tools that can be practiced daily.
This book is written for couples over 40, yet the skills and tools are useful to all couples and singles as well and in all differing kids on relationships.
I highly recommend this book if you want to thrive in your life!
