Excellent for any emerging manga artist!

This book taught me so many things! Before I read this book, I thought I was going to have to make all those screentones myself! Boy, was I wrong! :D This book tells you what materials you'll need to write and draw your own manga, and describes them in great detail! However, I only gave this book 4 stars because...

-It doesn't describe how to draw people very well. If you've mastered that (which I haven't), the book's fine.

-It barely has any information on paneling.

-The first few pages are colored digitally. A bit ironic that there are pages colored digitally in a book that gives instructions on how to draw traditionally, don't you think?

Overall, if you're still a beginner, this book is not for you. But if you've gotten pretty good at drawing people and are ready to move on to publishing your own manga, buy this book immediately!

Tip for you all: Ignore page 73. It doesn't know what it's talking about.

This book spends far more time telling us what kind of materials are needed and where to buy them/how to use them, than it does "how" to draw manga. I want to learn what characteristics make a successful manga figure, not how to produce a manga comic book. I did not feel this book was very useful - there is only one useful page, for example, discussing eyes, and it simply has 4 sets of "boys' eyes" and 4 of "girls' eyes."

I don't consider this a "how to draw" book but rather a "how to get started making manga books with all the appropriate materials." Give me a black marker and some colored pencils and I'm happy. This book isn't worth it.

Fits the title!

While this book has " All the Basics" in it's title, it still could be VERY useful to more mature artists. This book covers any kind of drawing tool you'd ever want: templates, rulers, inks,pencils,erasers, cutting tools, screen tone, mechanical pencils, tape, correction fluid, manuscript cards, light box tracer, manikins, tone tools, photo collections, manuscript paper, pen nibs, pen holders and much more. It tells you how to use them, and lots of tips. It has a section on Perspective, something VERY nifty. No "wrong" stuff, and has a section on drawing people,( of course ) which is pretty good. And 2 Interviews with manga artists Takao Yaguchi and Toru Fujisawa. The only reason I gave it a 4 is 'cause it could have had more variety. Dogs, cats, older people.
Overall, though, very good.

Overview Historically, the concept of "ondelettes" or "wavelets" originated from the study of time-frequency signal analysis, wave propagation, and sampling theory. In 1982, Jean MorIet, in collaboration with a group of French engineers, first introduced the idea of wavelets as a family of functions constructed by using translation and dilation of a single function, called the mother wavelet, for the analysis of nonstationary signals. However, this new concept can be viewed as the synthesis of various ideas originating from different disciplines including mathematics (Calder6n-Zygmund operators and Littlewood-Paley theory), physics (coherent states in quantum mechanics and the renormalization group), and engineering (quadratic mirror filters, sideband coding in signal processing, and pyramidal algorithms in image processing). Wavelet analysis is an exciting new method for solving difficult problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering, with modern applications as diverse as wave propagation, data compression, image processing, pattern recognition, computer graphics, the detection of aircraft and submarines, and improvement in CAT scans and other medical image technology. Wavelets allow complex information such as music, speech, images, and patterns to be decomposed into elementary forms, called the fundamental building blocks, at different positions and scales and subsequently reconstructed with high precision.

About the Author

Giovanni Olivi graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy and subsequently specialized in Dentistry. In 2002 he completed the postgraduate laser course at the University of Florence; in 2006 he achieved Advanced Proficiency and in 2009 was awarded Master status by the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD). Dr. Olivi has served as an assistant professor at many Italian universities, including Florence, Rome, Parma and Genoa, where he has been a member of faculty for over 10 years. Dr. Olivi was the 2007 recipient of the Leon Goldman Award for clinical excellence from ALD. He is an active member of the Italian Academy of Microscope Dentistry (AIOM), the Italian Society of Endodontics (SIE) and the Italian Society of Pediatric Dentistry (SIOI), as well as ALD. He has lectured on laser worldwide and is the author of more than 60 peer-reviewed articles as well as the books Laser in Dental Traumatology (in Italian, 2010; Martina, Bologna) and Pediatric Laser Dentistry: a User’s Guide (in English, 2011; Quintessence, Chicago). Dr. Olivi maintains a private practice in Endodontics, Restorative and Pediatric Dentistry in Rome, Italy.

Roeland De Moor is an extraordinary full professor at Ghent University, where he was former Dean of the Dental School and is currently Director of the Dental Clinic. He is also Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Endodontology and Director of the Ghent Dental Laser Center and the Ghent Dental Photonics Research Cluster. Professor De Moor is a founding member of the Belgian Association of Endodontics and Traumatology, of which he has been President or Vice-president eight consecutive times. He has received a number of honors and awards for his personal work and that of his research team. His research is focused especially on the use of laser technology in endodontics and for dental bleaching and on the use of light-activated nanoparticles for dental purposes, especially

disinfection. Professor De Moor is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Endodontics, the International Endodontic Journal, the Journal of Adhesive Dentistry, and Endodontic Practice Today. He lectures both nationally and internationally and is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, most of them on the subject of dental laser.

Enrico DiVito is the founder and director of the state-accredited Arizona School of Dental Assisting in the United States.�In addition to teaching at the school, he teaches as a clinical professor at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health and helped to create their Department of Laser Dentistry. Dr. DiVito earned his DDS at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, California and subsequently established a private practice in Scottsdale, AZ. In addition to general and cosmetic dentistry, he is known internationally for his expertise in craniomandibular disorders and has advanced training in both hard and soft tissue laser application. In 2007, he moved his practice to North Scottsdale and established the Arizona Center for Laser Dentistry, where he employs the latest techniques and materials and utilizes cutting-edge technology. Dr. DiVito is the inventor of the PIPSTM technology. He also lectures both nationally and internationally and has published numerous articles in various dental journals, including on PIPSTM.

Revelation, an Introduction and Commentary

This book is the best commentary on the Book of Revelation that I have read. The Introduction and Historical background alone are worth the price of this book. The first part of the book discusses among other things, the date this book was written, symbolism, interpretations, theme and purpose of the book. The second part a complete passage by passage commentary. After a thorough reading and studying of the first part, the commentary is easy to understand by the average student. A scholar of the Bible will find this book very useful. Mr Hailey writes in a manner that makes it so easy for the student of the Bible to understand a great part of this book and it's meaning to us today.

Excellent, misses the date, but still strong, conservative

As usual, Homer Hailey is ever the teacher. This commentary on The Revelation is concise and well-developed. His intro is worth the price of the book.....but, I am convinced that the value of the book would have been immeasurably increased had Mr. Hailey taken pains to critically examine the claims for a late 1st century date. Had he done so, I am further convinced that, with his consummate skill as an expositor, he would have provided an even better commentary that hinges on the early date. As conservative a development of the 1000-year nonsense as you will ever read!
Definitely a must read.

About the Author
Ahmed Kathrada was born in South Africa in 1929. After his release from prison in 1989, he was elected as a member of parliament and served as parliamentary counsellor in to President Mandela. In 1994, he was elected chairperson of the Robben Island Council. He lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The remarkable memoir of a remarkable man

No Bread for Mandela allows us to enter into the life of Ahmed "Kathy" Kathrada, a very humble yet very real hero, whose steadfast adherence to the highest ideals helped alter the future of a nation. Ahmed Kathrada played a pivotal role in ending apartheid, helping his country choose a path of reconciliation instead of revenge, and building a new democracy.

This book offers snapshots of his unusual life: An Indian, Muslim South African, Kathy became politically involved at the age of 10 and his activism continued despite repeated arrests, detentions, and bannings as well as increasingly severe measures by the Apartheid government. In 1964, he was convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment, alongside Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and the other Rivonia Trialists. Fellow prisoners for 26 years, these leaders were also the closest colleagues and friends, sharing the unshakable belief that truth, justice and democracy would ultimately triumph over oppression and racism.

Released from prison in 1989 at the age of 60, Ahmed Kathrada was at the center of dramatic changes in South Africa and went on to serve as a member of South Africa's first freely elected Parliament, as the Parliamentary Counsellor to the Office of President Mandela, and Chair of the Robben Island Museum.

He is proof that human beings are capable of exceptional goodness even in the most difficult circumstances, and that political power can be wielded with integrity, empathy, and compassion. Reverend Kevin D. Annett, BA, MA, MDiv, has lectured widely in Europe and America and has been a community worker, ordained minister, writer, filmmaker, and broadcaster. In 1992, as pastor in Port Alberni, British Columbia, he discovered a history of atrocity suggesting genocide in his church's residential school that had taken place for more than a century. Such had been the case in 140 such "schools" across Canada, which have been run by the major churches. Refusing to remain silent, he was discharged by his church and defrocked. For more than twenty years, he has advocated and worked internationally toward justice for indigenous people, children and other victims of Church and State. In 2015, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. Samuel Wedge is an autobiographical novel based on his story. Kevin Annett has produced and directed Unrepentant, an internationally award-winning feature-length film and has produced three nonfiction books, one of which, Love and Death in the Valley, was published by AuthorHouse in 2002 and is still selling twelve years later. He is a co-founder of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State.

The book; the read; the man

THE BOOK: It feels good in the hands. Comfortable choice of font, point, line spacing, paper. From that standpoint, a pleasure to read.

THE READ: In a word, excruciating. Annett is an accomplished writer and a natural master of words. It's advisable to undertake the read when you can go into your own depths, whatever that takes. It will drag you through the sediment of your own basest impulses, inspire you to the rawest honesty a human heart can realize, and then dare you to bridge the great divide between, with no devices and no tools, equipped only with the laser burn of that searing honesty.

THE MAN: Galileo...Snowden...Socrates. Annett is a teacher among us from whom we could learn how to save the world (isn't that what we all want to do, yes, no?). In the end, he calls himself a witness. Not only has he seen and heard, he has told what he has seen and heard. It is that witness, which he brazenly puts forth in this novel, which will do its part to turn the tides we all ride in these times. A story not included in "Samuel Wedge" is an exorcism he once performed on the Vatican - the sort of "brazenness" to which I refer. The fact that he persists in the telling, using one medium after another, is a modern-day marvel, and I, for one, am grateful.

Kevin Annett’s new novel, Samuel Wedge (AuthorHouse, Bloomington, Indiana, $19.95) is a slowly evolving chronicle of evil told by an old man, trying but failing to escape from a terrible secret. More sober than Joyce Cary’s larcenous but charming Gulley Jimson, but devastated less by the honor of struggle than Hemingway’s Old Man, Santiago, Wedge vacillates between his Florida sanctuary and his former Davidian confrontation, his combat avec ses defenseurs, with overpowering adversaries as a former young pastor in a remote logging town on Vancouver Island.

In his former bucolic life, he discovers and reveals the terrible history of Canada’s religious colonialism and thinly masked murder. Ultimately, sadder, wiser, but not totally bereft of hubris, he is left to confront his own private leviathan in Florida’s elephantine graveyard.

But just as Wedge’s isolated horror story expands and becomes a sickening metaphor for universal evil imbedded in the seats of the mighty, for the American reader, the comfortable contemplation of an Erehwon world to the North whose deadly simplicity gradually evokes the understanding that ubiquitous evil walks among us all. In the councils of church and state, Wedge discovers, and beyond – in the very boardrooms, the editorial offices and the judicial chambers of those who lever today’s world – there is murderous injustice in the form of tiny crucifixions that routinely occur, never talked about, much less mentioned, in our carefully manicured society and our narrowly censored media. And the thin edge of lonely heroism is all that can save us from destruction.
Like Santiago more than Gulley Jimson, Samuel Wedge – as simply as a little child – serves to lead us.

In today's world, faster and less costly ASIC chips are being designed at a much quicker rate than before. This requires that ASIC designers be able to design much more efficiently than before. Designers are constantly under pressure to come up with faster performing designs, but with fewer resources.

This has led to the development of many EDA tools that help designers to complete a design in a much shorter time frame. These EDA tools are based on the concept of designing ASIC components utilizing Hardware Description Language (HDL).

Today, a designer does not need to spend much time manually drawing the circuitry involved in a design but instead can write synthesizable HDL code. A common form of HDL code used in the ASIC industry for synthesis is Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) and Verilog. This book discusses only VHDL.

Synthesizable VHDL can be used as a form of input in synthesis tools such as Synopsys's Design Compiler. The synthesis tool can synthesize the logic circuit of the design with the functionality described by the VHDL code. This new methodology of design is a great asset to designers, as it increases both productivity and efficiency.

This book is divided into two parts. The first deals mainly with VHDL coding. Chapters 1-6 are included in the first part. In these chapters, the reader will see how simple and complex designs can be coded into synthesizable VHDL. Testbenches and timing diagrams are included to allow the reader to better understand the examples. The contents of this first part of the book will expose the reader to many examples of synthesizable code writing. In these examples, explanations and guidelines are included to give the reader an idea regarding the starting point required to write synthesizable VHDL code.

The examples in Chapter 3 are based on synthesizable code for simple and basic logic components that we see on a daily basis. Chapter 3 also discusses certain styling issues that are important for a designer to remember. Issues such as unwanted latch inference will be discussed in this chapter.

Chapter 4 discusses the usage of signal and variable in VHDL synthesis. Examples are included to bring the reader through the many stages involved in learning when to use signal and when to use variable.

Chapter 5 shows more examples of synthesizable VHDL code for complex logic components (shifter, counter, and memory module). Testbenches to exercise the examples are also included. Timing waveforms based on simulation results are drawn and discussed to enable the reader to obtain a better understanding of how each piece of synthesizable VHDL code translates into logic hardware.

Chapter 6 consists of a full-scale design project of a 3-stage pipeline microcontroller. This chapter begins with the definition of an instruction set for the microcontroller. This is followed by an architectural and microarchitectural definition of the microcontroller design.

Chapter 6 also shows the reader how the microcontroller is partitioned into functional blocks. The way these blocks can interface with each other to perform the instruction set execution is also discussed.

Synthesizable VHDL code for each functional block is then written and explained using simulation testbenches. Timing diagrams of simulation results are included to explain each functional block.

The second part of the book, which comprises Chapters 7-14, deals with logic synthesis using Synopsys's Design Compiler. Timing violations, microarchitectural tweaks, and synthesis options are all discussed to show the reader how a design that does not meet specification can be tweaked to obtain optimal results.

Chapter 7 discusses basic timing issues of which a designer should be aware prior to synthesizing a design. This chapter includes the topics of setup timing, hold timing, delay calculations, false paths, and multicycle paths. This chapter also discusses the general microarchitecural tweaks that can be done to obtain better timing performance.

Chapter 8 shows the reader the many different ways to optimize a design with different synthesis options using Synopsys's Design Compiler. Chapter 8 has many examples that shows the reader the different approaches to tweaking a design that does not meet timing requirements. Examples of designs that have timing violations (such as hold and setup violations) are fixed using the Design Compiler.

Chapter 9 discusses usage of GTECH components and how they can be used in VHDL code.

Chapter 10 discusses DesignWare components and how they can be inferred/ instantiated into VHDL code. This chapter also shows the reader how to create DesignWare components.

Chapter 11 discusses testability issues in synthesis and Chapter 12 gives an example of synthesizing for field programmable gate array (FPGA). Chapter 13 is a brief discussion of links from synthesis to layout while Chapter 14 provides several guidelines for a designer to follow when writing synthesizable code.

The many examples in this book, ranging from a simple description of basic logic components to a complex description of functional blocks within a pipeline microcontroller, show readers how each design can be transformed into synthesizable VHDL code. Each complex design is then synthesized and tweaked to obtain optimal synthesis results.

Upon completing this book, the reader will have a good understanding as to how designs can be coded into synthesizable VHDL, synthesized using Synopsys's Design Compiler, and tweaked to meet required specifications.

This book is targeted for engineers and students who want to learn how to write and synthesize VHDL code.

Very good book, save your time too

I bought this book together with the "Designer's Guide to VHDL", And I decided to read the later first. One week ago, I found out I was making a big mistake.
This book is wonderful, The author put in clear and necessary information and his experience to make the book thick, rather than putting in verbose explanations. When you read this book, you save your time and get better understand of the language, and you can start writing your own code very soon.
I love this book, and it doesn't make me sleepy like the "designer's guide to vhdl" did.

Not the best vhdl synthesis book

I found this book to be written in a confusing manner, and full of mistakes. For example, on page 51, the author says that hexadecimal E equals decimal 15. Apparently this is not a typo, because it is repeated on page 52, along with the statement that hexadecimal F equals decimal 16. For the beginner, I recommend Bhasker's vhdl primers. Ashenden's Designer's Guide to VHDL is the gold standard for a comprehensive text on the language itself, although it is skimpy on synthesis.

A must have for any logic synthesis designer

I agree with previous author. This book won't let you sleep like the "designer's guide to VHDL" will. I strongly recommend reading this book and then read another excellent book ""Digital Systems Design with VHDL and Synthesis" by "K.C. Chang".
However, this book still has weakness, it lacks some detailed info about the sysnthesis tool, such like what is wireload model. Knowing those in a little more detail should help the design in getting better result. Also I am not sure what is the point spending more than 100 pages with all the Appendix such like a list of the std_logic_1164 library and the EDIF files. I would rather having more detail info about the synthesis theory than those listing or take out the listings and cut the price down... .
