Good introduction

Good, quick introduction to Elasticsearch. Very useful if you're a Solr user already. If you're new to Lucene-based indexing and searching, there will be topics like analysis that will probably be pretty confusing. The book is fairly broad in scope, and although necessarily not very deep, it goes deep enough for a tutorial. It is a quick and effective way to learn enough to be ready to move on to more advanced resources. One note, this book makes no mention at all of Java APIs or APIs for any other language. Also, some things are already dated. The installation method for the web-based tool has changed a bit, and at least one example in the book doesn't work with the latest version of Elasticsearch (I used 2.2).

Definitely worth the fairly low purchase price so long as you don't expect it to be a comprehensive reference manual.

This is a fantastic book to get started with Elasticsearch. The concepts are clear and concise. Joel explain everything in crystal clear detail and it is a joy to read. It also has relevant screenshots to help you understand things better.

Look no further. Go for it if you are an absolute beginner and want to learn the basics of Elasticsearch.

Awesome! I like!

Of the 3 books in the series so far, this would be my favorite. I'd rate the first 2 as 4 stars. This one had enough fight scenes, intrigue, mystery, smart dialogue, snark, and romance, and the story flowed smoothly. Funny thing though is that near the end, there's almost a feeling that the author is tired and just wanted to wrap things up. But it's still presented well, don't get me wrong. There were also a lot of typo errors which can give you pause but not enough to detract from the book.

I don't know what the author's plan is for the heroine's romantic life. She is already in a relationship with Tiernan. But the author introduced a potential romance with a dragon. I'm really not looking for another Godhunter series version where the heroine tends to get attacked or kidnapped in every other book, villain falls for her, she falls for the kidnapper, then marries or consorts with them. I guess we will have to wait and see if Seren remains true to her claim of being a "one-man kinda girl" and stay in a monogamous relationship or if she ends up like Vervain; Seren's romantic evolution will be rationalized as just her being the typical oversexed fey. Well, we'll see how that goes...

The introduction of witches as the mutation of fey and human was interesting. It was a nice turn of events and a creative development of a new set of characters. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if a new series is introduced with Sarah as the lead. Or maybe in a short story...

Anyway, this series kind of started a little familiar to me (probably because I had just finished her Godhunter series and I keep thinking I'm in the same world) but sticking with it has borne fruit. I highly recommend this series --- almost similar to the Godhunter but has its own unique feel to it. I'm looking forward to the next book. I hope we hear more from the other Star's Guards besides Conri and Torquil and Gradh (where does the author get these names? :). And also other things that happen in Twilight Court.

One of my measuring sticks for a good book is if I'm willing to re-read it. So far, I've read this novel twice. This is good and entertaining reading and totally worth your time. I don't think you will regret it. I just wish the author could write faster...

In this latest book, Amy takes us on another Fairy-tastic journey! While investigating a series of attacks both as Fairy Princess and Ambassador, we are taken on an unexpected journey with Seren! I'm amazed at how Amy keeps coming up with such flawlessly executed stories. Amy's writing is fantastic and as the plot begins to unfold throughout this novel you'll be wooed by unforeseen outcomes. Every book I've read by Amy is incredibly hard to put down and I'm constantly sucked into the amazing worlds she creates. This story is no exception to her talent! Ms. Amy Sumida deserves the highest of accolades for another job well done!

Love it!!

This was such a fun and entertaining read with many twists!!

A lot of new characters were introduced in this book. And when I say a lot, I mean an entire coven of witches. Like, wow!

Not only that, it takes place in Tulsa of Oklahoma. Yay! I live in Muskogee, OK and it's about 50 minutes south of Tulsa. ❤️

And oh, let's not forget Lord Raza? Remember Seren's short encounter with him in the unseelie court from book 2?

Well, let's just say he is hunkalicious and if Seren don't want him, I will take him as a second husband. Okay, just kidding, he can be my secret lover.

It's just sad to see that Seren is settling for Teirnan when she has soooo many potential suitors lined up.

But overall, love this series!! I can't wait to read the next book which is already out!!!!

I would highly recommend this book for readers who loves Faeries.

Pretty good way of presenting the material but WAY too many errors

I like the way that this book presents material more than in most of the other popular optics books. The problem with this (first) edition is the number of mistakes. You can't go many pages without a typo, which is very annoying when learning the material for the first time. Many of the typos are within the derivations themselves. I feel like this book was pushed out as quickly as possible without being properly editted. I'd wait for the second edition.

Riddled with errors

While most of us don't have a choice in the selection of a text book, if you can at all avoid using this book, do. There are errors everywhere, starting in the tables in the front of the book, in equations, and typos throughout. Derivations are more often than not nearly impossible to follow. This book has promise in an edition or two, but the first edition leaves plenty to be desired.

I found this book to be horribly organized. Variables were not well defined and often I would have to look back through the book to find where the variable was first defined. This became quite annoying. Also, many of the problems and derivations could have used better pictures and diagrams in order to understand what the problem was really asking.

Sondra is the author of six books, among them, Landmark Essays on Writing Process; Felt Sense: Writing with the Body; 'Stepping on My Brother's Head' and Other Secrets Your English Professor Never Told You, creative nonfiction essays written by well-known writing teachers across the county and co-edited with Charles Schuster; and On Austrian Soil: Teaching Those I Was Taught to Hate, a memoir that tells the story of what happened to Sondra when she found herself teaching Austrian teachers whose parents had been Nazis. This book was a finalist in the 2006 Independent Booksellers Award for memoir and led to the creation of the Holocaust Educators Network, which Sondra now directs at the Memorial Library in New York City. A professor of English at Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, Sondra has received numerous awards and honors including a Guggenheim fellowship and the Professor of the Year Award from the Carnegie Foundation. Useful introduction....

I am currently using this as my primary text in a writing class. The students respond well to the authors' consistently upbeat tone, and variety of suggestions for writing (titled 'ways in' at the end of each chapter). There could be some better integration between the instructional part and the rather slim anthology, but on the other hand, the anthology section of any textbook dates it rather quickly, and it's often useful to share with students other samples of fiction chosed by different taste (mine) rather than the authors'. There are plenty of tools for generating writing ideas, and the workshop chapter (chapter six) is one of the most useful I've seen in any writing textbook--instead of just giving warnings about being nice and supportive, they offer a four-round response session which my students have responded to very positively, and a checklist of 20 things to look for or consider in improving a piece.

My only criticism is not really of the book, but of the textbook's companion website. It's difficult to navigate for students, doesn't offer that much, and offers only locked pdfs--what if I want to print out a copy for myself (the professor) to jot a few notes on? Can't do it.

A Nonfiction Writer's Essential

I'm in the middle of my Nonfiction Workshop class, but it's already abundantly clear that this book is essential to Nonfiction writing. The book breaks down terms and details about how to start and move through your nonfiction piece. It also includes essays from other writers as examples. This book is laid out great to take notes, and fits in purses and back pockets as easily as backpacks. I HIGHLY recommend this book for how it delivers ideas and pieces and how easily everything a nonfiction writer needs to know comes together at their fingertips.

This book goes through the craft of creative nonfiction with excellent short examples. It's a wonderful basic book for anyone thinking about writing a memoir or personal essays. Creative writing 101 with lots of excellent writing exercises to get things moving and on track. Bravo to the authors!!

You WILL "find a bit of yourself" in this book!!!

Olga Polomcova loves any kind of art. In the beginning of the book she is ill and has to stay home from school for 4 days.Other children just stay home 2 days;but since she had T.B when she was six she is sick longer.What we also find happenning is her cousin Joe runs away and comes back.He is a writer and an adventurer.So Olga meets a little girl named Sonia and her sibblings;and sort of "babysits" them and takes care of them,as their parents are not there.She also meets Imro,and starts to like him a little.Before you know it she's in love.But her family,especially her father,desn't like him;and then her father forbids her to see Sonia! this is an interesting book about a sensetive girl growing up.And I think it has helped me grow up!

A great book for anyone just starting out with GNU/Linux or wishing for a review

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

* To borrow another's phrase, this is NOT a "small form linux (sic) for dummies" title, and assumes you are a fairly knowledgeable about computers.
* Even though the front cover mentions Fedora, the coverage is minimal; whether that is good or bad is up to you.
* The majority of the book covers command-line applications, although there are GUI applications mixed in the later half of the book.
* While the command-line suggestions the book gives are solid, many of the GUI applications are no longer maintained and in my opinion should not have been anything more than a footnote.
* READ the errata pages for this book.

GENERAL:

The book opens with a brief primer on what commands are, what they look like on the command-line and covers the fact that they're not standardized. The book also makes good use of the space provided by making a point, but doing it well the first time instead of trying multiple approaches to explaining it (much like I might do). The coverage of the system directories was the best I've seen so far, breaking the paths into scope, category and applications. These are not standard terms as the author mentions, but they work great for the explanations.

From there you continue to explore commands in the context of a particular purpose. Some of the topics covered that I really appreciated were options to display non-printable characters like carriage returns, file/directory permissions, text manipulation and the shell scripting primer. While the scripting primer isn't enough to answer every question, it covered the common uses well enough that I'll be referring to this book whenever I need to remind myself of the syntax.

GOOD POINTS:

* Lots of useful tips
* The popular distros mentioned seem to be current
* Easy to read, both with the style of writing and the length of the book
* Commands are organized by purpose
* Insecure commands like telnet are covered, and sternly warned against

OUTDATED/UNMAINTAINED APPLICATIONS:

Instead of updating the content from the first edition to remove unmaintained software and include actively developed software (that has taken its place), the content was presumably unchanged.

Gaim was mentioned as an Instant Messaging client, but the project has been known as Pidgin for 5 years. I'm shocked that this made it's way past the author and the technical editor(s).

The inclusion of xv as a light-weight alternative to Gimp seems to be an odd choice, as it has a shareware license and is no longer supported or included by any current distros; installing the rpm on Fedora 16 didn't go well. Another light-weight editing application under active support (like Pinta) seems like it would have been a better choice to mention, even if it too isn't included by default.

grip was covered, but it hasn't had any updates in 6 years, so another ripping/encoding application should have also been covered. For example, Sound Juicer is provided for Gnome installations, while KDE has support for audio ripping built-in via Konqueror. KaduioCreator is also provided for KDE installations.

Ubuntu has a really good wiki page on this topic for further reading. Search for "CDRipping" on their wiki page and you should find it.

To be fair I really like grip and still use it in an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS VM, but let's face it, unless another maintainer steps up its days are seriously numbered. Much like grip, xmms has been discontinued for a while, but thankfully succeeded by various community forks. Like a few others, Audacious is still maintained and supported and would have been a much better application to mention in place of xmms.

RECOMMENDED CHANGES:

For reprints or future editions, replace outdated software suggestions with actively supported software. Many suggestions were very dated (grip, xv, xmms) and no longer maintained.

FINAL WORDS:

In closing, this is a great book for anyone just starting out with GNU/Linux, and anyone who needs a solid refresher of the basics. Even though I did not rate this book with the highest marks, it is a good value for the money and worth picking up for the current price.

This guide has enough and not too much. Excellently laid out for either straight reading or reference. It got me oriented to Linux very quickly and will do well to have along side when you boot your first install of Linux.

Buy This Book and thank yourself later.....

Buy this Book, don't think about it, just buy it and you WILL thank yourself later. I don't write many reviews, but this book is full of wisdom and insight about how you should approach all aspects of your music career (and all your business in general), that it would be a dis-service for me not to write about it. First off, I have been purchasing "music business books" since 1994 and while I always gained a nugget or two of knowledge from them, I have never read a book that presented an entire "roadmap" for music business success. I have purchased all the books you see here on amazon from "Hack Your Hit" to "Future Hit DNA" and while those books are helpful, they don't compare to the 40+ chapters (600 pages!) that encompasses what you get here. This book will not only help you gain and attract fans on sites like Twitter and Facebook, but offer you with a philosophy on HOW to gain and attract these fans. It will also give you a list of about 100 other social networks and other sites that you probably never knew about and HOW to go about utilizing them successfully. It also will teach you how to get your songs licensed, how to prepare for the studio, how to get on tour and about everything else you would need to know about the modern music industry (along with a plethora of contacts to get you started, and how to use them). In my opinion this is the complete MUSIC BIBLE for DIY musicians. BUY IT

I wish this book was available ten years ago...

I've been a long-time reader of Musformation, and this book essentially takes all of the wisdom taught on the site and compiles into one easy to read codex of information. It actually contains tons more extra information, and it is well worth the money. Implement just a few of these techniques and the book will pay for itself. I'm about halfway through, and very impressed. The book provides a great framework for developing a strategy to launch (or improve) an artist's or band's music career. This resource isn't just a regurgitation of the same tired music advice that you've heard before. There are tips on everything from website building essentials and how to properly use social networking, to ways to make your touring more efficient and effective, and how to capitalize on album leaks. There are also great lists that make this book equally effective as a go-to manual for fine tuning certain aspects of your strategy, as it is for a cover-to-cover course on how to navigate the music industry. It's written in an accessible, and sometimes witty style that makes all of the information easily digestible. I really do wish a resource like this was available when I first started making music. I highly recommend!

If you're a DIY musician/artist, you need this book!

Every musician/artist at some point has probably said to themselves, "I really wish there was a handbook that could give me all the tips and tricks to marketing, social networking and concepts to get my music heard". Well look not further, this book is right on the money! It has everything you can possibly think of to help you navigate the various social networks and marketing strategies and make the most out of them. Get more fans is not one of those boring books that tells industry stories all day and talks about the places you wish you could be, instead it focuses on helping you get where you need to be if you apply yourself and use the methods in the book. I've been following Jesse Cannon's musformation.com blog for a couple of years now and I can say if I knew now what i've learned from Jesse and the site about 5 - 6 years ago, things would've have been completely different for me and my music career. So if you've never heard of musformation.com and you need an opinion on wether you should spend the 25 bucks or not, well here you go - BUY THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
